MorFunSeed: A Morphological and Functional Seed Database of Tree and Shrub Species Commonly Used for Direct Seeding in the Cerrado and Atlantic Forest Biomes of Brazil

open access: yesEcological Research, Volume 41, Issue 4, July 2026.
The MorFunSeed dataset compiles standardized seed morphology and functional traits for 131 tree and shrub species native to Brazil's Cerrado and Atlantic Forest biomes. It includes 26 variables and 3406 records, providing a consistent and comparable structure across species.

Anatomical and Histological Characterization of the Intestine of Artibeus lituratus

open access: yesAnatomia, Histologia, Embryologia, Volume 55, Issue 4, July 2026.
ABSTRACT The order Chiroptera is highly diverse and is the second richest among mammals. Approximately 181 species are known in Brazil, with varied feeding habits that make them essential for ecological functions such as seed dispersal and plant regeneration. Despite the importance of their ecosystem services, the anatomical and histological aspects of

Tropical Bee Assemblage Diversity Decreases With Elevation While Body Size Increases

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 58, Issue 4, July 2026.
Photos of bee specimens collected in the Colombian Andes across a nearly 3000 m elevational cline. They are arranged to illustrate both the decline in richness with elevation and the increase in community average body size with elevation. ABSTRACT Elevation gradients are powerful drivers of changes in species composition, richness, and functional ...

Is There Life After Death? The Role of Standing Dead Phorophytes in Supporting Tropical Epiphyte Diversity

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 58, Issue 4, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Global increases in tree mortality from climate change and land‐use are altering forest structures, impacting canopy‐dwelling plants like vascular epiphytes, which depend on host trees (phorophytes). When a phorophyte dies standing, it becomes a snag, the local substrate conditions change and microclimatic exposure may increase, particularly ...

Increased Unripe‐to‐Ripe Fruit Ratios Within Bicolored Displays Enhance Interactions With Avian Frugivores

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 58, Issue 4, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Plants dispersed by visually oriented frugivores may enhance fruit detection through bicolored displays. Using manipulative experiments, I show that higher proportions of unripe fruits, rather than bicolored display alone, increase frugivory.
