Floral Reward, Advertisement and Attractiveness to Honey Bees in Dioecious Salix caprea

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
In dioecious, zoophilous plants potential pollinators have to be attracted to both sexes and switch between individuals of both sexes for pollination to occur. It often has been suggested that males and females require different numbers of visits for maximum reproductive success because male fertility is more likely limited by access to mates, whereas ...

The bee, the flower and the electric field

open access: yesBIO Web of Conferences, 2016
Insects use several different senses to forage on flowers, and detect floral cues such as color, shape, pattern, humidity and chemical volatiles. This presentation will present our discovery of a previously unappreciated sensory capacity in bumblebees ...

Ant-Pollinator Conflict Results in Pollinator Deterrence but no Nectar Trade-Offs

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2018
Direct and indirect negative interactions between ant guards and pollinators on ant-plants are expected for two reasons. First, aggressive ants may deter pollinators directly.

Conformal Metallosaccharide Hybrid Films for Protecting Wood Surfaces From Environmental Damage

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Ti‐ribose hybrid films fabricated by molecular layer deposition form a conformal and uniform coating on wood surfaces, which provides water repellence, dimensional stability, and resistance to acidic and alkaline environments, while preserving the natural appearance.

Reproductive biology of Stomatium bolusiae (Aizoaceae: Ruschioideae)

open access: yesBothalia: African Biodiversity & Conservation, 2013
Flowers of Stomatium bolusiae are self-incompatible. The species exhibits crepuscular and nocturnal anthesis, exploiting two different pollination mechanisms. The structure of the hermaphroditic flower appears not to favour cross-pollination.

Shaping Matter with Acoustic Waves: From Particles to Functional Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Acoustic‐directed assembly is reviewed as a materials‐oriented strategy for organizing particles, polymers, metals, and biological systems into functional structures. The review distinguishes reversible manipulation from permanent structure formation through medium fixation, particle fixation, and in situ material generation, highlighting routes toward

Honest signalling and the billboard effect: how Heliconiid pollinators respond to the trichromatic colour changing Lantana camara L. (Verbenaceae)

open access: yesJournal of Pollination Ecology, 2017
Plants communicate with their pollinators through an astonishing range of signals that serve as either honest or deceptive cues which draw in and inform potential visitors of possible rewards.

Nocturnal Bees Feed on Diurnal Leftovers and Pay the Price of Day – Night Lifestyle Transition

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, 2020
Bees exemplify flights under bright sunlight. A few species across bee families have evolved nocturnality, displaying remarkable adaptations to overcome limitations of their daylight-suited apposition eyes.

Sustainable Electrochemical Synthesis of High‐Quality MXenes: Mechanistic Insights, Applications, Challenges, and Technological Prospects

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Electrochemical etching provides an eco‐friendly alternative to hazardous HF methods for MXene production. This approach facilitates the selective isolation of the A‐layer from MAX phases with tunable surface terminations. Controlling voltage, electrolytes, temperature, and duration enables the optimal structural integrity. Nevertheless, existing scale
