Abstract Premise Taxonomic differentiation of teosinte species (Zea spp.), the closest relatives of maize (Z. mays) is crucial for understanding their distribution, ecology, and evolutionary history. Resolving the taxonomic uncertainties is of scientific interest and has practical implications for biodiversity management, preservation, and utilization.

Abstract The Itaboraí Basin, Southeastern Brazil, preserved one of the most diverse mammalian faunas from the Paleogene, with Metatheria comprising more than 60% of its diversity. Among identified metatherian clades, it has been argued that Paucituberculata is represented by “Riolestes capricornicus”.
