Effects of Environmental Changes in Degraded Areas on the Establishment of Plant Communities in the Brazilian Cerrado

open access: yesInternational Journal of Forestry Research
Understanding the interrelationships between plant communities and soil attributes in gully erosion can make valuable contributions to strategies focused on the conservation and recovery of degraded areas.

The GrassSyn dataset: Soil organic carbon stocks in Brazilian grassy ecosystems. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Environ Qual
Abstract Although ecosystem management and restoration are known to enhance carbon storage, limited knowledge of ecosystem‐specific soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks and processes hinders the development of climate‐ready, biodiversity‐focused policies. Baseline SOC stocks data for specific ecosystems is essential.

Assessing the mechanisms and impacts of shrub invasion in forests: A meta‐analysis

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 60, Issue 11, Page 2314-2326, November 2023., 2023
Taken together, these results suggest that restoration efforts should focus on (i) increasing the presence of strong native competitors or functionally diverse native communities, (ii) decreasing sources of invasive shrub propagules while keeping the canopies closed when invasion occurs via high propagule pressure, (iii) avoiding management techniques ...

Forest conversion into pasture selects dung beetle traits at different biological scales depending on species pool composition

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 13, Issue 4, April 2023., 2023
Briefly, we assess the impacts of forest conversion on the functional diversity of dung beetles in two different regions of Brazil, considering in particular intraspecific variation. To do this we conducted standardized surveys in seven forest fragments and adjacent pastures for every region and measured fourteen traits in individuals collected in each

Value of human‐modified forests for the conservation of canopy epiphytes

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 54, Issue 4, Page 958-968, July 2022., 2022
Although HMFs provide important refuge for many species, our results show that they do not provide suitable conditions for the maintenance of current or future canopy epiphyte communities. Our findings suggest that conserving large continuous old‐growth forests is the only viable conservation option for protecting most vascular epiphytes.

Why forest fails to recover after repeated wildfires in Amazonian floodplains? Experimental evidence on tree recruitment limitation

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 109, Issue 10, Page 3473-3486, October 2021., 2021
Our experimental evidence suggests that soil nutrient limitations may slow down forest recovery after repeated wildfires in Amazonian floodplains. Yet, because floodplain trees are able to germinate from seeds and establish successfully in twice burnt forests, seed limitation seems to be the reason why forest recovery fails persistently. Seeding native

Rapid evolution of a floral trait following acquisition of novel pollinators

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 109, Issue 5, Page 2234-2246, May 2021., 2021
We test whether the acquisition of a new pollinator functional group (hummingbirds) can lead to rapid evolution of flowers after the recent trans‐continental range expansion of Digitalis purpurea. In naturalised populations in two separate regions in the Americas, we found convergent changes and strong selection for larger proximal corolla tubes, a ...

open access: yesScientia Plena, 2023
