Flow Boiling in Microchannels

Heat Transfer: Volume 2, 2005
Experiments are reported on convective boiling of water in a system of parallel micro-channels with a constant wall heat flux and highly sub-cooled inlet flow. The test section comprises a nickel plate containing ∼388 micro-channels along the center-plane with a mean hydraulic diameter of 145 μm with and a mean separation of 35 μm.

An onset of nucleate boiling criterion for horizontal flow boiling

International Journal of Thermal Sciences, 2000
An extensive database has been collected for the evaporation of two hydrofluorocarbon refrigerants (HFC- 134a and the zeotropic mixture HFC- 407C) and the natural refrigerant ammonia (R-717). A model to predict the onset of nucleate boiling has been successfully developed to differentiate pure convective evaporation from mixed convective and nucleate ...

Gradient Microstructures for Flow-Boiling Enhancement

International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, 2023
Herein, we apply grayscale lithography to produce novel gradient microstructures, demonstrating the enhancement of flow boiling through the manipulation of drag forces upon the forming bubbles. The use of engineered 3D anisotropy allowed directional control of boiling enhancement, with respective critical heat flux and peak heat transfer coefficient ...

Computations of boiling flows

International Journal of Multiphase Flow, 1998
Abstract A numerical method to simulate liquid–vapor phase change is presented. The method is based on the so-called single field formulation where one set of equations for conservation of mass, momentum and energy are written for the entire flow field.

Computations of Boiling Flows

Volume 3, 2004
Numerical simulations of boiling flows are discussed. The change of phase from liquid to vapor and vice-versa usually takes place in a highly unsteady manner where the phase boundary is very convoluted. Direct numerical simulations therefore require the accurate solution of the Navier-Stokes equations and the energy equation in each phase and the ...

Flow boiling—the ‘apparently nucleate’ regime

International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, 1989
This paper re-examines the nucleate boiling term in the Chen correlation (ASME Paper 63-HT-34 (1963)) for the heat transfer coefficient in flow boiling, which he derived from a correlation then current for pool boiling. The re-examination employs all available data published for water, with results of a recent simplified analysis of pool boiling which ...
