A fundamental limit on energy savings in controlled channel flow, and how to beat it [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Fluid Mechanics, Vol. 954, R3 (2023), 2022
We derive a limit on energy savings in controlled channel flow. For flow in a channel driven by pressure, shear, or any combination of the two, and controlled via wall transpiration or spanwise wall motion, the uncontrolled laminar state requires the least net energy (accounting for the energetic cost of control).

Applying deep reinforcement learning to active flow control in weakly turbulent conditions

open access: yesThe Physics of Fluids, 2020
Machine learning has recently become a promising technique in fluid mechanics, especially for active flow control (AFC) applications. A recent work [J. Fluid Mech. (2019), vol. 865, pp.

GPU-Accelerated Infill Criterion for Multi-Objective Efficient Global Optimization Algorithm and Its Applications

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2022
In this work, a novel multi-objective efficient global optimization (EGO) algorithm, namely GMOEGO, is presented by proposing an approach of available threads’ multi-objective infill criterion.

Deep model predictive flow control with limited sensor data and online learning

open access: yesTheoretical and Computational Fluid Dynamics, 2020
The control of complex systems is of critical importance in many branches of science, engineering, and industry, many of which are governed by nonlinear partial differential equations. Controlling an unsteady fluid flow is particularly important, as flow

Comparison of gap-based and flow-based control strategies using a new controlled stochastic cellular automaton model for traffic flow [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
Autonomous vehicles are essential to future transportation systems, potentially reducing traffic congestion. This study examines the impact of different vehicle control strategies on traffic flow through simulations. We propose a novel stochastic cellular automaton model, the controlled stochastic optimal velocity (CSOV) model, which incorporates ...

Chain recurrence and Selgrade`s theorem for affine flows [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Dynamics and Differential Equations (2024), 2023
Affine flows on vector bundles with chain transitive base flow are lifted to linear flows and the decomposition into exponentially separated subbundles provided by Selgrade's theorem is determined. The results are illustrated by an application to affine control systems with bounded control range.

A generalized processor sharing approach to flow control in integrated services networks-the single node case

open access: yes[Proceedings] IEEE INFOCOM '92: The Conference on Computer Communications, 1992
The problem of allocating network resources to the users of an integrated services network is investigated in the context of rate based flow control. The authors propose the use of a packet service discipline at the nodes of the network that is based on ...

An Optimized Pressure-Based Method for Thrust Vectoring Angle Estimation

open access: yesAerospace, 2023
This research developed a pressure-based thrust vectoring angle estimation method for fluidic thrust vectoring nozzles. This method can accurately estimate the real-time in-flight thrust vectoring angle using only wall pressure information on the inner ...

Ultrasound Flow-Monitoring and Flow-Metering of Air–Oil–Water Three-Layer Pipe Flows

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2017
The combined use of ultrasound pulse-echo intensity and Doppler shift frequency is examined as a means to measure strong unsteady three-phase pipe flows of a gas and two liquids.

Active flutter suppression for a flexible wing model with trailing-edge circulation control via reinforcement learning

open access: yesAIP Advances, 2023
Previous attempts at active flutter suppression have been based on driving the deflection of multiple pairs of discontinuous mechanical control surfaces.
