Liquefaction flow slide at horizontal ground
2005A liquefaction flow slide is an instability in loosely packed saturated sand or silt after liquefaction under monotonic loading. The conditions for such a flow slide are discussed. The relevance of these conditions is illustrated by application to slope failure.

Constitutive Modeling of Flow Liquefaction and Cyclic Mobility
Computer Simulation of Earthquake Effects, 2000Flow liquefaction is due to contractive response of loose granular soils, while cyclic mobility is related to both contractive and dilative response of granular soils. These two failure mechanisms may occur in a single soil, depending on the density and confining pressure applied.

Unified modeling of flow liquefaction and cyclic mobility
Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering, 2000Abstract Flow liquefaction and cyclic mobility are two different phenomena that are encountered during strong earthquakes. Flow liquefaction is associated with the contractive behavior of loose granular materials and cyclic mobility is associated with the dilative response of both loose and dense granular materials at low confining stresses.

Parameters describing flow liquefaction of soils
2005The paper presents the results of comprehensive laboratory test programme carried out on various soils. Monotonic undrained triaxial tests were executed on specimens subjected to isotropic and anisotropic consolidation. Some parameters based on mean effective stress values at specific stages of a test were used for the sake of quantitative analysis of ...

Undrained shear strength for liquefaction flow failure analysis
Canadian Geotechnical Journal, 1995An important factor in evaluating the stability of hydraulic fills against flow sliding is the undrained steady-state strength mobilized in the field. This paper proposes an empirical relationship between three factors: the undrained strength back-calculated from fills that failed by flow sliding, equivalent clean sand normalized blow-count values, and

Modeling Delayed Flow Liquefaction Initiation after Cyclic Loading
Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics V, 2018Ground shaking during earthquakes can be a prominent cause of strength loss in loose saturated soils. In some cases, uncontrolled pore pressure build-up and liquefaction may occur with a time lag with respect to strong ground motion, especially when the time-dependent properties of the soil interact with the constraints brought by undrained and/or ...

Liquefaction of coal in a flowing-solvent reactor
Fuel, 1991Abstract A flowing-solvent liquefaction reactor has been used to examine the primary solubilization potential of a range of coals. The reactor configuration allows the suppression of secondary reactions by sweeping the heated zone with a continuous flow of solvent. The design of the system combines low thermal inertia and direct electrical resistance

Liquefied strength ratio from liquefaction flow failure case histories
Canadian Geotechnical Journal, 2002The shear strength of liquefied soil, su(LIQ), mobilized during a liquefaction flow failure is normalized with respect to the vertical effective stress (σ 'vo) prior to failure to evaluate the liquefied strength ratio, su(LIQ)/σ 'vo. Liquefied strength ratios mobilized during 33 cases of liquefaction flow failure are estimated using a procedure ...

Unified modeling of soil behaviors before/after flow liquefaction
Computers and Geotechnics, 2018Abstract Flow liquefaction of soil involves a phase transition process from solid to fluid. A constitutive model that can describe the soil behaviors of both the solid and fluid phases in a unified way was proposed. The constitutive model adopts a phase transition criterion to detect the onset of flow liquefaction and associates an elastoplastic ...

Wave-induced liquefaction and flow of subaqueous mud layers
Coastal Engineering, 1998Abstract In this paper, results of laboratory experiments on wave-induced liquefaction and transport of mud are presented. Wave-induced stresses inside the bed at the onset of liquefaction are shown to be just larger than the yield strength of the bed, which is determined independently with sounding tests.
