Theories in this chapter look at how communication flows between parties and what obstacles can impede or prevent this flow. Most of these theories give us insights into the transmission of information rather than the impetus for or effects of communication.

Flow Patterns, Flow Pattern Maps, and Flow Pattern Transition Models
2020This chapter provides some of the flow visualization results of the experimental setup discussed in Chapter 2, a succinct review of the flow patterns, flow pattern maps, and flow pattern transition models.

Flow Patterns, Transitions and Models for Specific Flow Patterns
2003This chapter presents flow patterns, the configurations into which gas/liquid flows can arrange themselves in pipes and other geometries. Simple, mainly empirical, graphical methods for predicting the flow patterns occurring are then presented. The effect of flow patterns on heat transfer and of heat transfer on flow patterns are then considered ...

Adaptation to Incomplete Flow Patterns: No Evidence for ‘Filling-In’ the Perception of Flow Patterns
Perception, 1982Inspecting a radial flow pattern reduced visual sensitivity to changes in the size of a test square of 0·5 deg side length when the square was accurately located at the point previously occupied by the focus of the adapting flow pattern. The effect was reduced by a third when there was a 1·0 deg diameter hole at the centre of the flow pattern, and ...

Journal of Applied Physics, 1949
For a definite Mach number, given by M2 = 4/(3−γ), all Mach lines in a steady plane two-dimensional potential flow of a perfect gas with expansion exponent γ have zero curvature. The use and significance of this relation are discussed, and the hypothetical expansion law consistent with straight Mach lines is deduced.

Inspiratory flow pattern in humans
Journal of Applied Physiology, 1984The theoretical estimation of the mechanical work of breathing during inspiration at rest is based on the common assumption that the inspiratory airflow wave is a sine function of time. Different analytical studies have pointed out that from an energetic point of view a rectangular wave is more economical than a sine wave.

Sensitivity to corners in flow patterns
Spatial Vision, 1987Flow patterns are two-dimensional orientation structures that arise from the projection of certain kinds of surface coverings (such as fur) onto images. Detecting orientation changes within them is an important task, since the changes often correspond to significant events such as corners, occluding edges, or surface creases.

Recording the Pattern of Salivary Flow
Journal of Dental Research, 1966SYNOPSIS IN INTERLINGUA LE REGISTRATION DEL CONFIGURATION DEL FLUXO SALIVARI.—Un registrator del effluxo de saliva, construite circum tres detectores photoelectric, esseva usate in registrar simultaneemente le configuration del fluxo ab 3 glandulas e le saliva esseva collectionate pro un analyse subsequente.

Pattern formation in flowing sand
Physical Review Letters, 1989Using digital subtraction radiography, we study the basic modes of a granular material (here sand) flowing through a flat hopper. These modes take the form of density waves whose formation and propagation is controlled by several parameters, including the mass flow rate M and the hopper angle \ensuremath{\theta}.

Urinary Flow Patterns in Premature Males
Journal of Urology, 2010We sought to assess urinary flow patterns in premature males using ultrasound flow probes.Specifically customized ultrasound flow probes connected to a flowmeter were mounted on the penis of 29 premature males (median gestational age 31.3 weeks). Flow data were sampled to a personal computer and flow curves were assessed with regard to configuration ...
