The Theoretical Flow Ripple of an External Gear Pump

Fluid Power Systems and Technology, 2002
In this paper, the theoretical flow ripple of an external gear pump is studied for pumps of similar size using different numbers of teeth on the driving and driven gears. In this work, the flow ripple equation is derived based upon the flow of incompressible fluid across the changing boundaries of a control volume.

Unidirectional flow over asymmetric and symmetric ripples

Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 1992
Detailed measurements of velocity and turbulence over fixed sets of two‐dimensional asymmetric and symmetric ripples were collected in a flume equipped with a laser‐Doppler velocimeter. The measured velocity profiles show a region of strong wake influence extending 2–3 bedform heights above the bed and an outer, spatially uniform flow that has adjusted

Response of sand ripples to change in oscillatory flow

Sedimentology, 2006
AbstractRipples take time to evolve to a new equilibrium state in response to a change in wave‐generated oscillatory flow. The paper presents results from flow tunnel experiments designed to examine oscillatory flow transient ripple processes under controlled, full‐scale laboratory conditions. The experiments include study of the growth of ripples from

Sediment Transport over Ripples in Oscillatory Flow

Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, 2006
In this paper, we present results of a large-eddy simulation of flow and suspended sediment transport around prototypical ripples based on “long-wave ripples” as measured at Duck, N.C., in waves of height 1 m and period of 10 s . Solving the volume-filtered Navier–Stokes equations for the momentum and an advection–diffusion equation with a setting term

Combined Oscillatory and Steady Flow over Ripples

Journal of Waterway, Port, Coastal, and Ocean Engineering, 1994
Laser-doppler-anemometer measurements of the fluid velocities in combined oscillatory and steady flow over rippled beds are reported. The direction of the steady current was parallel to the ripple crests and at right angles to the oscillatory flow. Measurements with the steady flow alone showed that the velocity distribution was quite well represented ...

Hydraulic Flow Ripple Cancellation Using the Primary Flow Source

BATH/ASME 2016 Symposium on Fluid Power and Motion Control, 2016
Flow ripple is generally considered to be a negative attribute of positive displacement units as the resulting pressure ripple can cause unsteady behavior in the overall system as well as generate significant audible noise that can spread throughout the entire hydraulic system.

Voltage Ripple of Electrode Sensor in Electrolyte Flow

Journal of Communications Technology and Electronics, 2018
Voltage ripple of electrode sensor that moves relative to electrolyte (flow noise) is interpreted in agreement with experimental data using variations in the adsorption rate of oxygen on the electrode surface upon variations in the thickness of the diffusion layer. A relationship of electrode potential and flow velocity jumps is derived.

Friction coefficients of rippled beds in oscillatory flow

Continental Shelf Research, 1982
Abstract Dissipation and friction factors have been computed for rippled beds in oscillatory flow using a finite-difference solution of the two-dimensional equation of vorticity. The computations show good agreement with available experimental results and also, at very low Reynolds numbers, with the results of a small-perturbation solution of the ...

Oscillating flow over steep sand ripples

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 1981
Although the form and dimensions of steep vortex ripples are well studied in relation to the oscillating flow which generates them, nevertheless the accompanying fluid motion is not yet understood quantitatively. In this paper we present a method of calculation based on the assumption that the sand-water interface is fixed and that the effect of sand ...
