Photosynthesis in Fluctuating Light

Ecology, 1969
Experiments were conducted to test the assumption, always made in models of the productivities of higher plant communities, that photosynthetic rates measured in steady light can be used to predict the rates in fluctuating light. The photosynthetic rates of whole cucumber plants (Cucumis sativus) were measured in light which alternated between high and

Dynamics of photosynthesis in fluctuating light

Current Opinion in Plant Biology, 2006
Our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of plant photosynthesis is expanding from insights into static fluxes in constant irradiance to an understanding of complex dynamic patterns in fluctuating light. Knowledge about regulatory interactions, information about relevant biological features that emerge in fluctuating light, and the new standards ...

Universal Conductance Fluctuations of Light

Physical Review Letters, 1998
We observed that laser light, multiply scattered through small samples of optically dense colloidal suspensions, builds up anomalous long range correlations in the transmission speckle pattern. The dynamic autocorrelation function of angular integrated light intensity has two contributions, ${C}_{2}(t)$ and ${C}_{3}(t)$, which decay on very different ...

Light Fluctuations and Photosynthesis

Annals of Botany, 1974
The effects of fluctuating light on photosynthesis are examined. A simple model of leaf photosynthesis is used so that the analysis can be presented in explicit terms, the time-dependent problem is solved, and the response of photosynthesis to step changes in light-flux density is calculated.

Insect vision: Contrast perception under fluctuating light

Current Biology, 2023
Natural light levels vary tremendously, both over the day and from minute to minute, creating a formidable challenge for animals that rely on vision to survive. New work in fruit flies demonstrates the neural mechanisms that produce luminance-invariant perceptions of visual contrast.

Particulate concentration measured from scattered light fluctuations

Optics Letters, 2000
Scintillation of scattered radiation caused by particulate matter is studied. By use of stochastic theory, expressions for mathematical expectation, variance, and scintillation index are derived. A method of measuring particulate-mass concentration with the scintillation index is proposed. The major advantage of this method is its insensitivity to lens

Theory of photoelectric detection of light fluctuations

Proceedings of the Physical Society, 1964
The basic formulae governing the fluctuations of counts registered by photoelectric detectors in an optical field are derived. The treatment, which has its origin in Purcell's explanation of the Hanbury Brown-Twiss effect, is shown to apply to any quasi-monochromatic light, whether stationary or not, and whether of thermal origin or not.

Photosynthesis in Fluctuating Light Environments

2006
The light environment in plant canopies is characterized by rapid fluctuations in photon flux density (PFD) because of the occurrence of sunflecks. These sunflecks can contribute most of the PFD available for photosynthesis and thus the mechanisms that control their utilization can have a significant impact on the carbon gain within canopies or in ...

Photosynthesis in fluctuating light

2023
Light is the essential energy source for plants to drive photosynthesis. In nature, light availability is highly variable and often fluctuates on very short time scales. As a result, plants developed mechanisms to cope with these fluctuations. Understanding how to improve light use efficiency in natural fluctuating light (FL) conditions is a major ...

Light fluctuations in the laser

International Laser Science Conference, 1986
When the working point of a laser is taken through its threshold of oscillation, the optical field undergoes an order-disorder type of phase transition, which is manifest in the statistics of the emitted light photons, and has been studied experimentally by photoelectric counting and correlation measurements. In a single-mode laser the phase transition
