Computational methods for fluid-structure analysis are surveyed. Emphasis is placed on semi-discretization methods, such as finite element and finite difference methods. Appropriate mesh descriptions and time integration procedures for various classes of problems are discussed.

Almost all problems solved in the previous chapters dealt with static fluid–structure scenarios where just the configuration of a solid structure at rest (or moving in the flow direction) determined the fluid flow field. Examples included internal flow through a conduit or external flow past submerged bodies.

Parallel methods for fluid-structure interaction
1998A parallel CFD code capable of simulating flow within moving boundaries has been coupled to a beam element structural dynamics code. The coupled codes are used to simulate fluid- structure interaction for a class of applications involving long and slender structures, e.g. suspension bridges and offshore risers.

There are many kinds of fluid-structure interaction problems1,2,3. In this chapter only a few non-flow field problems, mainly fluid-shell dynamic interaction and fluid-solid impact will be discussed. The fluid-shell systems are used as models for sloshing and POGO (structure-propulsion coupling oscillation) in liquid rockets, floating lids Of oil tanks,
