What is a fluid challenge?

Current Opinion in Critical Care, 2011
The fluid challenge is used in the fluid management of many sick patients. The principle behind the fluid challenge technique is that by giving a small amount of fluid in a short period of time, the clinician can assess whether the patient has a preload reserve that can be used to increase the stroke volume with further fluids.

Fluid challenge predicts clinical worsening in pulmonary arterial hypertension

International Journal of Cardiology, 2018
AIM A fluid challenge with rapid saline infusion during right heart catheterization has been shown to be useful for the differential diagnosis between pre- and post-capillary pulmonary hypertension.

Does a two‐minute mini‐fluid challenge predict fluid responsiveness in pediatric patients under general anesthesia?

Paediatric anaesthesia, 2019
Very little evidence for predictive markers of fluid responsiveness has been reported in children as compared to adults. The impact of hypovolemia or hypervolemia on morbidity has driven interest in the fluid challenge titration strategy.

Ability of mini fluid challenge to predict fluid responsiveness in obese patients undergoing surgery in the prone position.

Minerva Anestesiologica, 2019
BACKGROUND Pulse pressure variation (PPV) and stroke volume variation (SVV) can predict fluid responsiveness effectively. However, high body mass index (BMI) can restrict their use due to changes in respiratory system compliance (CS), intra-abdominal ...

Assessment of Fluid Requirements: The Fluid Challenge

2010
The fluid challenge can be applied as a technique to detect patients who may benefit from fluid administration, especially when methods predicting fluid responsiveness cannot be applied. It is important to evaluate the response to fluids, even when patients are predicted as responsive.

Fluid challenge in patients at risk for fluid loading‐induced pulmonary edema

Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica, 2003
Background:  This study evaluated the effects of protocol‐guided fluid loading on extravascular lung water (EVLW) and hemodynamics in a group of patients at high risk for volume expansion‐induced pulmonary and systemic edema. Methods:  Nine acutely admitted septic patients with acute lung injury (ALI) were prospectively studied.
