Inertial dynamics of air bubbles crossing a horizontal fluid–fluid interface [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The dynamics of isolated air bubbles crossing the horizontal interface separating two Newtonian immiscible liquids initially at rest are studied both experimentally and computationally.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Performance prediction of air drag brake units for Shinkansen and verification by running test

open access: yesNihon Kikai Gakkai ronbunshu
The performance of Air Drag Brake (ADB) units for Shinkansen trains was predicted using wind tunnel experiments and numerical analysis, and running tests were carried out using a test car equipped with a number of ADB units.

SIMULATION OF FLUID-STRUCTURE INTERACTIONBASED ON AN IMMERSED-SOLID METHOD [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Mechanical Engineering and Sciences, 2013
A new method for studying the interaction between an elastic object and a fluid has been developed. The fluid phase including solid interface is solved by our immersed solid method of body-force type.

Measuring cell adhesion forces with the atomic force microscope at the molecular level [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
In the past 25 years many techniques have been developed to characterize cell adhesion and to quantify adhesion forces. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been used to measure forces in the pico-newton range, an experimental technique known as force ...

Pre‐analytical optimization of cell‐free DNA and extracellular vesicle‐derived DNA for mutation detection in liquid biopsies

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Pre‐analytical handling critically determines liquid biopsy performance. This study defines practical best‐practice conditions for cell‐free DNA (cfDNA) and extracellular vesicle–derived DNA (evDNA), showing how processing time, storage conditions, tube type, and plasma input volume affect DNA integrity and mutation detection.

Evaluation of Tsunami Fluid Force Acting on a Bridge Deck Subjected to Breaker Bores

open access: yes, 2011
The giant earthquake of MW = 9.3 and the induced tsunami in December 26, 2004 caused the catastrophic damage of infrastructures. A bridge structure is an important infrastructure to support recovery activities after a tsunami event, hence it is required ...

Dynamics of laminar pressure-driven channel flows laden with neutrally buoyant finite-size particles. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Since the pioneering work of Reynolds (1883), much effort has been allocated on the topic of laminar-turbulent transition regime in a single-phase flow, with special focusing on the unstable and intermittent natures of this regime (Mullin, 2011).

Keratin 19 as a prognostic marker and contributing factor of metastasis and chemoresistance in high‐grade serous ovarian cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Keratin 19 (KRT19) is overexpressed in high‐grade serous ovarian cancer with high levels of Kallikrein‐related peptidases (KLK) 4–7 and is associated with poor survival. In vivo analyses demonstrate that elevated KRT19 increases peritoneal tumour burden.

Design and Simulation of Small-Scale Horizontal-Axis Wind Turbine with Diffuser Effect

open access: yesMATEC Web of Conferences, 2019
The article presents the results of the investigation of a rotor assembly of a wind turbine with a horizontal axis of rotation. The rotor is equipped with a diffuser which is an integral part of the power generating unit.
