Investigation of Impulse Response of an ER Fluid Viscous Damper

Journal of Intelligent Material Systems and Structures, 2009
The electrorheological (ER) fluid is a fluid that shows non-Newtonian fluid characteristics when the electrical field is applied. In this study, an experiment of an ER fluid viscous damper, in which an ER fluid is enclosed in the gap of a piston—cylinder system, is carried out to investigate the performances of the ER fluids and the effects of the ...

Viscous Heating of Fluid Dampers. II: Large-Amplitude Motions

Journal of Engineering Mechanics, 1998
In this paper, the problem of viscous heating of passive and controllable fluid dampers is analyzed at the limit of long-stroke motions, where most of the fluid travels through the damper orifice(s) or valve(s). This study is of interest in the case of strong earthquake motions where dampers are subjected to long-stroke motions.

Seismic Behavior of Wood‐framed Structures with Viscous Fluid Dampers

Earthquake Spectra, 2004
The suitability of viscous fluid dampers for seismic protection of light‐framed wood buildings is investigated in this paper. Nonlinear finite‐element models of wood building components (shear wall) and systems (three‐dimensional buildings) are developed and numerical analyses are performed to evaluate their response to seismic loading.

Nonlinear dynamic characteristics of a micro-vibration fluid viscous damper

Nonlinear Dynamics, 2018
This study is concerned with the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of a micro-vibration fluid viscous damper used in a satellite. When a control moment gyroscope is working, it produces micro-vibrations, which is a disadvantage for imaging equipment. Taking a single-tube micro-vibration fluid viscous damper as our research subject, a nonlinear dynamic ...

Reliability of a r.c. frame equipped with linear and nonlinear fluid viscous dampers

2019
Retrofit interventions with Fluid Viscous Dampers (FVDs) are efficient to reduce the vulnerability of existing buildings. In particular, external dissipative system based on FVDs are very promising since they present some feasibility advantages with respect to more classic solutions involving devices installed within the existing frames.
