Fluidization and Fluidized Bed

2019
This chapter introduces a multiscale method for modeling gas–solid flows, from steady-state modeling for quick engineering design, continuum model for industrial scale reactor simulation, discrete particle method for lab-scale reactor simulation to direct numerical simulation for exploring the underlying mechanics.

Design of fluidized‐bed fermentors

Biotechnology and Bioengineering, 1986
AbstractDesigning a fluidized‐bed bioreactor requires choosing the best support particle (if any). Effectiveness factors (proportional to reactor volumetric productivity) are derived for flocs, solid spherical supports, porous supports, and adsorbent supports.

Fluidization And Fluidized Beds

2019
One of the most unusual types of equipment used by chemical engineers is the fluidized bed, a device in which solid particles, for example sand or catalyst particles, are made to behave like elements of a fluid, and hence are “fluidized”. The state of being fluidized, called “fluidization”, turns out to be advantageous for a number of important ...

Design of a fluidized bed scrubber

Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Process Design and Development, 1985
Current design of the fluidized bed scrubber (FBS), otherwise known as the Turbulent Contact Absorber or the Mobile Bed Contactor, is based on experience and rules of thumb. In this paper published equations on hydrodynamics and mass transfer are reviewed. From the equations a logical design procedure for the FBS Is proposed.

Dynamics of a shallow fluidized bed

Physical Review E, 1999
The results of the experimental study of the dynamics of a shallow fluidized bed are reported. The behavior of granular material is controlled by the interplay of two factors--levitation due to the upward airflow, and sliding back due to gravity. Near the threshold of instability, the system shows critical behavior with remarkably long transient ...

Biological denitrification in a fluidized bed

Biotechnology and Bioengineering, 1984
AbstractA fluidized bed biofilm reactor using sand as the carrier particle was employed to study the effects of superficial velocity on the removal of nitrates as well as on the growth of the biofilm. Velocity was found to affect significantly both nitrate removal and biofilm growth.

Fluidization of nanoagglomerates in a rotating fluidized bed

AIChE Journal, 2006
AbstractAgglomerates of nanoparticles were fluidized in a rotating fluidized bed (RFB) system at different rotating speeds corresponding to 10, 20, 30 and 40 times the gravity force (9.8 m/s2). The powders, fumed silica Aerosil® R974, Aerosil® R972 and Aeroxide® TiO2 P25, with a primary particle size of 12, 16 and 21 nm, respectively, form micron sized

Fluidization of cylinder particles in a fluidized bed

Advanced Powder Technology, 2017
Abstract An experimental study of the flow regimes and transitions in a fluidized bed (cross-section of 200 mm × 200 mm and height of 2000 mm) containing a mixture of cylindrical particles and silica sand is carried out. Six different flow regimes are identified: fixed bed (F), bubbling fluidization (B), transition fluidization (T), partial ...

On partial fluidization in rotating fluidized beds

AIChE Journal, 1987
In a rotating fluidized bed, unlike in a conventional fluidized bed, the granules are fluidized layer by layer from the (inner) free surface outward at increasing radius as the gas velocity is increased. This is a very significant and interesting phenomenon and is extremely important in the design of these fluidized beds.

The development of fluidized bed combustion

Environmental Science & Technology, 1980
Technical feature:The development of fluidized-bed combustion (FBC) technology in the U.K. during the 1960's and beyond is reported. FBC technology was developed to reduce the capital costs of coal combustion and to facilitate the efficient use of lower grade coal. The status of operating FBC boilers in the U.K. is examined.
