Abstract Quinolones have been used therapeutically for more than 30 years, predominantly for treatment of urinary tract infections. As the antimicrobial and pharrnacokinetic characteristics of the older quinolones, such as nalidixic acid or oxolinic acid, were far from optimal, they have been considered second-line therapeutics.
