Relict fluvial terraces on the Tsondab Flats, Namibia

Within the hyper-arid central dune Namib, the dune-free Tsondab Flats, extending 40 km west from Tsondab Vlei, are characterized by terraced topography incised into a conglomerate-capped red sandstone. The hypothesis is posed that the terraces are fluvial in origin and that they preserve a record of fluvial incision and arid interruption.

Fluvial terraces preserve the history of river incision into bedrock over geologic time scales. In this paper we use terraces and a comparison of terrace longitudinal profiles to stream longitudinal profiles to develop a conceptual model of bedrock fluvial incision in diverse geologic, tectonic, and climatic settings.

Fluvial cut-and-fill terraces record climate oscillations

Using a model of long-term fluvial erosion and sediment transport (Yuan et al., 2019, JGR-SE), we demonstrate and quantify a direct, physical explanation for the relationship between climate oscillations and the formation of fluvial cut-and-fill terraces.

Abstract Along the Usui River in central Japan, three well-developed terrace levels are observed. Each terrace is subdivided into two segments: a filltop terrace along the upper reach and a strath terrace along the lower one. Three valley fillings with coarse gravel beds in the upper reach correspond to the last three glacial ages.
