Out in the cold? A review of Early Middle Palaeolithic settlements in northern Central Europe, age data and geological preconditions for site formation and preservation

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
The characteristics of settlement of Neanderthals in northern Central Europe during the earlier phases of the Middle Palaeolithic (Marine Isotope Stage 8–6) have been a matter of debate for decades, specifically regarding the population dynamics at such latitudes during the coldest phases. In this paper, we review the known archaeological record of the

Unravelling the evolution of the Frébouge polygenetic cone in Val Ferret (Mont Blanc Massif)

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
Proglacial settings in the Alps are typically polygenetic, often characterized by a complex and discontinuous interplay between glacial, fluvial and gravitational processes. These processes yield high volumes of sediments, which usually exceed their transportation capacity.

Stratigraphic evidence for modern‐like glacier extents in south‐central Alaska within the last glacial period (MIS 3)

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
The last (Wisconsinan) glacial period was punctuated in North America by two glacial maxima, known as the Early and Late Wisconsinan glaciations. In Alaska, these maxima and their subsequent retreats have been the object of dating efforts to reconstruct local climatic events and compare them to global trends.

Mapping of River Terraces with Low-Cost UAS Based Structure-from-Motion Photogrammetry in a Complex Terrain Setting

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2019
River terraces are the principal geomorphic features for unraveling tectonics, sea level, and climate conditions during the evolutionary history of a river.

Gravel deposit produced by a flash paleoflood in a succession of Quaternary terraces in the Plain of Vic (NE Iberian Peninsula) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
In contrast with the abundance of studies of fluvial terraces, caused by river dynamics, there are very few descriptions of alluvial deposits produced by flash floods and mass movements.

Middle to Late Pleistocene landscape evolution and glacial dynamics in the Eastern Alps: the Gröbminger Mitterberg record, Austria

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
Glacial erosion during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) has removed much evidence of earlier glaciations and interglacials in the European Alps. At Gröbminger Mitterberg (GM), beneath a blanket of LGM till, a distinctive sediment archive preserves deposits predating the LGM.

Discordance between cosmogenic nuclide concentrations in amalgamated sands and individual fluvial pebbles in an arid zone catchment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Based on cosmogenic 10Be and 26Al analyses in 15 individual detrital quartz pebbles (16–21 mm) and cosmogenic 10Be in amalgamated medium sand (0.25–0.50 mm), all collected from the outlet of the upper Gaub River catchment in Namibia, quartz pebbles yield

Gentle Slopes and Fluvial Terraces around Mt. Shokanbetsudake, Hokkaido

open access: yesAnnals of The Tohoku Geographycal Asocciation, 1987
This paper discusses the paleoenvironment of eastern slopes of Mt. Shokanbetsudake, Hokkaido, on the basis of evidences of gentle slopes and fluvial terraces. The fluvial terraces are classified into five surfaces (terrace I to V in descending order) and the gentle slopes into two surfaces (gentle slope I and II). In most case, gentle slope I and gentle

Refining the timing of Middle Pleistocene (MIS 12 to MIS 6) ice advances into northern central Europe: sedimentological analysis and single‐grain luminescence dating of glaciotectonic complexes and tunnel‐valley fills

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
We summarize the current state of knowledge on the age of the Middle Pleistocene ice advances into northern central Europe and provide 25 new single‐grain feldspar luminescence ages of Elsterian and Saalian glacigenic sediments to constrain the age of the ice advances and their tentative correlation with marine isotope stages/substages.

Vertical slip rates of active faults of southern Albania inferred from river terraces

open access: yesAnnals of Geophysics, 2014
Fluvial terraces of Shkumbin, Devoll, Osum and Vjosa rivers (southern Albania and northwestern Greece) are studied in order to quantify the vertical slip rates of the large active faults of the Dinaric-Albanic-Hellenic Alpine fold belt.
