Micro and Nanostructural Diversity of Lizard Osteoderm Capping Tissue in Relation to Mechanical Performance

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study shows that lizard osteoderm capping tissue is a hyper‐mineralized hydroxyapatite layer consistently covering the superficial osteoderm surface in those species studied here, yet it varies greatly in morphology, nanostructure, and mechanical performance across species.

DO SPORTFISH CONSUMPTION ADVISORIES AFFECT RESERVOIR ANGLERS' SITE CHOICE? [PDF]

open access: yes
Increasing numbers of freshwater ecosystems have had sportfish consumption advisories posted in recent years. Advisories are sometimes issued in lieu of environmental remediation if they are considered more cost-effective than "cleaning up" the resource,

Allergic reactions associated with tsetse fly bites

open access: yesAnnals of Medicine
Background Allergic reactions in response to arthropod bites are a growing concern worldwide. Alpha-Gal syndrome (AGS) is a red meat allergy associated with IgE antibodies against galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose (alpha-Gal), typically linked to tick bites ...

Evaluation of the Dual Impact of Nanotechnologies on Health and Environment Through Alternative Bridging Models

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This review explores how alternative invertebrate and small‐vertebrate models advance the evaluation of nanomaterials across medicine and environmental science. By bridging cellular and organismal levels, these models enable integrated assessment of toxicity, biodistribution, and therapeutic performance.

Learning to Fly by Crashing

open access: yes, 2017
How do you learn to navigate an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and avoid obstacles? One approach is to use a small dataset collected by human experts: however, high capacity learning algorithms tend to overfit when trained with little data. An alternative

Stable Fly (Dog Fly) Control

open access: yesEDIS, 2012
The stable fly is a blood-sucking filth fly of considerable importance to people, pets, livestock, and the tourist industry in Florida. Filth flies, including stable flies, exploit habitats and food sources created by human activities, such as farming.

Triacylglycerol-rich lipophorins are found in the dipteran infraorder Culicomorpha, not just in mosquitoes

open access: yesJournal of Insect Science, 2002
Lipophorin is the major hemolymph protein responsible for lipid transport between tissues of insects. Lipophorins from several insect species in order Diptera (the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster from the suborder Brachycera, the mosquito Aedes aegypti;

A Soft Microrobot for Single‐Cell Transport, Spheroid Assembly, and Dual‐Mode Drug Screening

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A soft, untethered hydrogel microrobot enables precise single‐cell delivery, self‐assembly into 3D spheroids, and real‐time thermal actuation. Driven by light‐induced convection and embedded with gold nanorods and temperature sensors, the microrobot guides cells, modulates local microenvironments, and supports drug testing.

Rainbow Photonic Crystals: Self‐Assembly of Carbohydrate Bottlebrushes Block Copolymers

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Full‐color reflective 1D photonic crystals, capable of a tunable, responsive, and reversible color with high repeatability, are created from the self‐assembly of carbohydrate‐based brush block copolymers (BR01‐04). Abstract Tunable and responsive photonic crystal systems are the subject of great research interest owing to their ability to actively ...
