Characteristics and operational control strategies of grid‐forming long‐/short‐duration energy storage systems: A review

open access: yesEnergy Conversion and Economics, Volume 7, Issue 2, Page 127-148, April 2026.
Abstract Energy storage systems (ESSs) are increasingly critical for maintaining the stability and flexibility in power systems with rising renewable penetration. Grid‐forming (GFM) ESSs have emerged as a pivotal technology, capable of providing essential voltage and frequency support by establishing grid references in converter‐dominated systems. This

System characterization of a magnetically suspended flywheel [PDF]

open access: yes
The purpose of flywheel energy storage is to provide a means to save energy during times when the satellite is in sunlight, and then return the energy during the time when the satellite is in darkness.

Performance Evaluation of an ANN‐Based Model for Hot Rolling Current Prediction: A Sensitivity and Statistical Indicator Approach

open access: yesEngineering Reports, Volume 8, Issue 3, March 2026.
An ANN‐based model accurately predicts electromotor current in hot rolling by optimizing thickness reduction across passes. Statistical validation (R2 > 0.99) and sensitivity analysis reveal higher energy efficiency and process stability in thicker sheets. A novel metric offers deeper insight into deformation energy and current distribution.

Generic composite flywheel designs [PDF]

open access: yes, 1984
Fiber reinforced composites belong to a new class of materials and allow great flexibility in flywheel design. The most efficient flywheel may no longer have the classic Stodola taper and indeed, may not even be round.

Bi‐Level Coordination of Demand Response and Multiple Virtual Power Plants in a Distribution Network for Flexibility Assessment

open access: yesEnergy Science &Engineering, Volume 14, Issue 3, Page 1505-1528, March 2026.
This study presents a hierarchical coordination framework where multiple VPPs interact with the DSO to optimize energy trades and flexibility offers. Each VPP aggregates DERs and DR, performing internal optimization, day‐ahead bidding, and assessing flexibility to reduce excess renewable generation and pollution.
