Flywheels on a roll

IEEE Spectrum, 1997
Superconducting bearings promise to reduce friction by up to two orders of magnitude, auguring flywheels in the 10-kWh class. The author discusses the principles of stable magnetic levitation of permanent magnets using superconductors. The author then discusses the application of the principles to bearings using high temperature superconductors.

Design and Manufacturing of Filament Wound Elastomeric Matrix Composite Flywheels

open access: yesJournal of Reinforced Plastics and Composites, 1997
A procedure for the filament winding of thick glass and carbon fiber reinforced urethane matrix composite flywheels is presented. The impetus for fabrication of urethane matrix composite rings, which is discussed in the paper, stems from several ...

System Analysis of Flywheels

2022
Among the several energy storage systems, flywheels can be considered a suitable option for power intensive applications that require the release/absorption of high power in a short time duration. In this chapter, starting from the fundamentals, a detailed analysis of the main components and the applications of the flywheel energy storage system is ...

New concept flywheel-ring flywheel generator

Conference Record of the Power Conversion Conference - Yokohama 1993, 2002
A large-scale ring shaped flywheel generator which is magnetically levitated is proposed. It is applicable to a power storage system in place of the pumped storage in a hydroelectric power station. Using an experimental model, stable levitation has been realized. The magnetic pole is designed to decrease iron losses on rotation.

Flywheel load equalizer

Proceedings of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, 1911
The use of flywheels to equalize the loads on steam engines, punch presses, rolling mills and other machinery of this class has been known for years but its use in connection with electrical machinery for operating hoists, steel rolls, etc., is comparatively new.

Massless flywheel

Assembling in Mechanical Engineering and Instrument-Making, 2022
Analytical synthesis of the artifi cial moment of inertia and establish the parameters that determine it have been carried out. The artifi cial inertia device may include an electrical capacitor and an electromechanical converter, such as a DC machine. The main advantages of an artifi cial fl ywheel over a "natural" one are incomparably lower mass and ...

Procedure for Measuring Bore and Face Runout of Flywheels, Flywheel Housings, and Flywheel Housing Adapters

2017
<div class="section abstract"> <div class="htmlview paragraph">This SAE Recommended Practice applies to any internal combustion engine which can utilize SAE No. 6 thru SAE No. 00 size flywheel housing. It provides instructions for correcting flywheel housing bore runout readings which are influenced by crankshaft bearing clearance. Limits
