Binary-Phase vs. Frequency Modulated Radar Measured Performances for Automotive Applications

open access: yesSensors, 2023
Radars have been widely deployed in cars in recent years, for advanced driving assistance systems. The most popular and studied modulated waveform for automotive radar is the frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW), due to FMCW radar technology’s ease

Portable Radar for Noncontact Heart Rate Monitoring and Estrus Detection in Dairy Cows

open access: yesIEEJ Transactions on Electrical and Electronic Engineering, EarlyView.
This study introduces a portable radar system for real‐time monitoring of respiratory and heart rates in dairy cows. It uses millimeter‐wave Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar to perform noncontact physiological sensing, reducing behavioral disturbance. The radar system's design prioritizes portability, cost‐effectiveness, and robustness,

Coherence Cloning Using Semiconductor Laser Optical Phase-Lock Loops [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
We demonstrate the concept of coherence cloning where the coherence properties of a high-quality spectrally stabilized fiber laser are transferred to a commercially available high-power DFB semiconductor laser (SCL) using an optical phase-lock loop.

Low-Resolution Imaging FMCW Lidar

open access: yes, 2022
We demonstrate the imaging capability of a frequency modulated continuous wave lidar based on a fiber bundle. The lidar constructs velocity and range images for hard targets at a rate of 60 Hz. The sensing range is up to 30 m with 20 mW of output power. The instrument employs custom electronics with seven parallel heterodyne receivers.

Lithium Niobate Quadratic Integrated Nonlinear Photonics: Enabling Ultra‐Wide Bandwidth and Ultrafast Photonic Engines

open access: yesNanophotonics, Volume 15, Issue 9, 13 May 2026.
This perspective surveys emerging quantum and classical photonic applications across operating wavelengths and timescales, highlighting persistent technological gaps in integrated light sources. We examine the unique advantages of quadratic nonlinear photonics on the thin‐film lithium niobate (TFLN) platform and discuss strategies for realizing ...

First Triple‐Frequency Retrievals of Binned Raindrop Size Distributions

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 7, 16 April 2026.
Abstract Our understanding of raindrop size distributions (DSDs) aloft is largely limited, owing to a scarcity of effective measurements. In this study, a two‐step optimal estimation technique is developed for retrieving binned DSDs based on a newly developed vertically‐pointing triple‐frequency radar system. In the first step, we employ the Tridon and
