Membrane Wrapping for High Capacity and Rapidly Switchable Adhesives

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A membrane‐wrapping mechanism enables high‐capacity, rapidly switchable adhesion by coupling suction, friction, and adhesion. Broadband performance is achieved in dry and underwater conditions, allowing fast, reversible manipulation of objects of diverse sizes and shapes, from delicate eggs and berries to flat, complex, or heavy objects. These outcomes

A first assessment of the interdependency of mesh motion and free surface models in openfoam regarding wave-structure interaction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Mesh motion is of key importance in assuring adequate CFD modelling of wave- structure interaction problems, such as wave impact on floating offshore wind turbines and seakeeping of ships. Wave forcing often leads to large displacements

Photothermal Macroporous Lignin Cryogels for Off‐Grid, Continuous Atmospheric Water Collection via Interlayer Heat Recovery

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Photothermal, macroporous lignin‐based cryogels are engineered to convert sunlight into low‐grade heat. Integrated as stacked beds in a drum‐type device, a thin copper interlayer transfers waste heat between beds, enabling interlayer heat recovery and continuous solar cycling.

Upcycling of Disposable Face Masks into Water‐Resistant and Flame Retardant Foams

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Disposable mask waste is upcycled into lightweight polypropylene‐based foams with tunable porosity and composite architectures reinforced by ear‐loop fibers. The sustainable solvent‐based process enables upcycling rates of 91% and solvent recovery of >90%.

Numerical simulation of different displacement modes of composite cold drive and thermal recovery in ordinary heavy oil reservoirs

open access: yesYouqi dizhi yu caishoulu
To address the challenges in ordinary heavy oil reservoirs during the mid-to-late stages of steam huff and puff operations, such as low reservoir pressure, low oil-steam ratio, and channeling risks associated with conventional water injection for energy ...

Fluid-structure interaction simulation of flow-mediated dilation of a straight arterial conduit [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Introduction Flow-mediated dilation (FMD) is a key non-invasive clinical assessment of endothelial dysfunction, an indicator of early atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. FMD involves the measurement of an artery dilation, e.g.

Theory‐Guided Design of Non‐Precious Single‐Atom Catalyst for Electrocatalytic Chlorine Evolution

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
To overcome the reliance on noble metals for the chlorine evolution reaction (CER), we designed a non‐precious single‐atom catalyst (SAC), NiN3O–O. It achieves a low overpotential of 75 mV, 95.8% Cl2 selectivity, and outperforms commercial dimensionally stable anodes (DSAs).

Monolithic coupling of rigid body motion and the pressure field in foam-extend

open access: yes, 2017
In this paper a monolithic algorithm for coupling rigid body motion equations and pressure field within a Finite Volume framework is presented. Monolithic coupling enables fewer number of pressure–velocity loops per time–step, thus reducing the required computational time.

MAGTWIST: A Magnetically‐Driven Rotary Actuator Using a Traveling‐Wave With Integrated Stiffness Tunability

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
MAGTWIST: A compact magnetic rotary actuator, enabling smooth, stepless rotation, and on‐demand locking. Inspired by peristalsis, a soft polymer belt generates a traveling‐wave, enabling 270° rotation when heated. Cooling stiffens the belt, locking it in position and enabling it to withstand high loads.
