Focal Epilepsies: Immunologic and Inflammatory Mechanisms

Seminars in Pediatric Neurology, 2014
There is increasing evidence documenting activation of inflammatory processes in focal epilepsies. This review article summarizes current data regarding immune mediated inflammatory processes in patients with symptomatic partial epilepsies such as mesial temporal sclerosis, focal cortical dysplasia, and Rasmussen's encephalitis.

Mechanisms of Disease: focal segmental glomerulosclerosis

Nature Clinical Practice Nephrology, 2005
Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), a subtype of "idiopathic nephrotic syndrome", is not a single disease, but a lesion that initially affects the glomerulus followed by the tubulointerstitium and renal vessels. The term 'FSGS' does not accurately encompass the various pathologic features of the glomerulus, which are not always focal, segmental ...

The Focal Mechanism of Earthquakes

1962
Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the development of Byerly's method of fault-plane determination. The essential features of the methods of focal mechanism study are established and their efficacy as a means of investigating the origins of earthquakes has been demonstrated. The focal mechanism studies of earthquakes intend two things.

Generalized focal mechanism

1961
It is shown that a system of forces consisting of three couples without moment introduces a cone of the second degree as the surface separating the compressions and dilatations as recorded at extended distances. This cone is the generalization of the pair of planes associated with a single couple with moment or with two couples without moment.

Seismicity, focal mechanisms, and tectonics

Reviews of Geophysics, 1983
In the last four years, there has been a tremendous increase in the detail of tectonic processes reported in the typical seismotectonic study. New data from many local and regional networks of seismographs established during the previous four‐year period, plus the now routine application of improved hypocentral location procedures, long‐period body ...

Focal mechanism of volcanic earthquakes [PDF]

open access: possibleBulletin Volcanologique, 1972
The focal mechanism solutions for Type A volcanic earthquakes connected with eruptions of the Miake-sima, Tori-shima (Japan) and Beerenberg (Jan Mayen Island) volcanoes are presented. All the considered volcanic earthquakes show focal mechanism of the strike-slip type of faulting.

Focal Mechanism and Seismogram Modeling

2010
The focal mechanism or the fault plane solution describes the orientation of the fault and the slip on the fault relative to a geographical coordinate system. The focal mechanism is the most important parameter to determine once the location and magnitude are known and it is used to determine the actual geometry of the faults as well as inferring the ...

On the Focal Mechanism of Italian Earthquakes

1980
Compressions and dilatations of all earthquakes occurring in the Italian peninsula have been revised in order to evaluate their focal mechanism and relate then to regional seismotectonic. Some fault plane solutions not reported in the available literature have been determined, including the 1915 Avezzano earthquake (M 1 = 6.8).

Focal mechanisms of Indian earthquakes

Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 1972
abstractFocal mechanism solutions are presented for two earthquakes that occurred in peninsular India. The first motions of P, PKP and the polarization (or first motions) of S waves were used for this investigation. Both of these mechanisms are found to be associated with strike-slip faulting.

Focal Cerebral Ischemia: Mechanisms

2007
Hypothermia can be neuroprotective when applied during or after focal cerebral ischemia. Its neuroprotective effect is especially robust in the laboratory where it has been shown to ameliorate many of the damaging effects of cerebral ischemia. Most laboratory research on therapeutic cooling in stroke models has been conducted in rodent models of ...
