STRONG FOEHN AS A TYPE OF SEVERE WEATHER

open access: yesHrvatski meteorološki časopis, 2005
Strong foehn winds have caused severe damages in Switzerland for centuries. But how often and in which part of the year stormy foehn winds are taking place in the north of the Alps? The synoptics of very strong foehn cases are discussed briefly, and the Swiss warning system is also presented.

An adiabatic foehn mechanism [PDF]

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, 2018
Atmospheric mountain flows, produced when the incoming wind is small near the surface and continuously increases with altitude, are evaluated with models of increasing complexity. All models confirm that foehn can be produced by a mountain gravity wave critical level mechanism, where the critical level is located below the surface.

The impact of a foehn wind on PM10 concentrations and the urban boundary layer in complex terrain: a case study from Kraków, Poland

open access: yesTellus: Series B, Chemical and Physical Meteorology, 2021
Kraków, Poland, is a city with poor air quality, located in the large Wisła (Vistula) valley, and affected by a foehn wind from the Tatra Mountains. We analyzed 14 long episodes of the foehn from the periods Sep 2017 - Apr 2018 and Sep 2018 - Apr 2019 ...

Foehn classification and climatology in Sofia for 1975–2014 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Foehn is a warm, dry, and downslope wind blowing in the lee side of a mountain range. It is a well known example of a local atmospheric circulation. The foehn wind is also an extreme weather event, and its forecasting is an important task for the short ...

Foehn winds at Pine Island Glacier and their role in ice changes [PDF]

open access: yesThe Cryosphere, 2023
Pine Island Glacier (PIG) has recently experienced increased ice loss that has mostly been attributed to basal melt and ocean ice dynamics. However, atmospheric forcing also plays a role in the ice mass budget, as besides lower-latitude warm air ...

Machine learning-based prediction of Alpine foehn events using GNSS troposphere products: first results for Altdorf, Switzerland [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Measurement Techniques, 2022
Remote sensing of water vapour using the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is a well-established technique and reliable data source for numerical weather prediction (NWP).

A foehn-induced haze front in Beijing: observations and implications [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2020
Despite frequent foehns in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei (BTH) region, there are only a few studies of their effects on air pollution in this region, or elsewhere.

Characteristics and evolution of diurnal foehn events in the Dead Sea valley [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2018
This paper investigates frequently occurring foehn in the Dead Sea valley. For the first time, sophisticated, high-resolution measurements were performed to investigate the horizontal and vertical flow field.

The Greenland Foehn [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 1877

Machine-learning-based identification of influencing factors and synoptic patterns of foehn on the eastern foothills of the Taihang Mountains, China [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics
Foehn is generated over alpine terrain and is exerting increasingly pronounced impacts on air pollution, heatwaves, wildfires, and human health under global warming.
