The fog clears

A 40-year-old woman presented to the Radiology Department for a pre-operative chest radiograph. The radiographer noted an area of fogging on one corner of the film (Figure 1a). Suspecting that the cassette was faulty, a repeat radiograph was performed 7 min later.

ON windless evenings fog commonly forms in dense, sharply defined patches, especially in sheltered bays of ponds. As the evening progresses and the temperature falls, these patches may grow and coalesce, advancing over the pond but maintaining a sharp front at which visibility changes profoundly within a few metres.
