The role of thermal stratification on the co‐spectral properties of momentum transport above an Amazonian forest

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Using micrometeorological measurements in Brazil at the Amazon Tall Tower Observatory, the scalewise impact of thermal stratification on turbulent momentum fluxes is explored in the roughness sublayer and the atmospheric surface layer. A scalewise co‐spectral budget model developed here revealed that the turbulent momentum co‐spectrum Fwu(kx)$$ {F}_{wu}

A climatology of trapped lee waves over Britain and Ireland obtained using deep learning on high‐resolution model output

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
This article presents a climatology of trapped lee waves over Britain and Ireland using machine‐learning techniques applied to high‐resolution model output driven by reanalysis data. This climatology builds on previous work and is much more comprehensive and covers a longer time period than previous studies.

Revisiting measurement and representation errors in geophysical sciences: From classical collocation‐based measurement error estimation to “sampling‐aware field‐informed retrieval”, a method that explicitly accounts for representation errors

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Geophysical fields exhibit structure across a wide range of scales such that it is insufficient to define errors as deviations from a reference truth. This work takes filtering into account to define measurement, model, and representation errors. A new measurement‐error estimation method, called sampling‐aware field‐informed retrieval (SAFIR), is ...

When tiny convective spread affects a midlatitude jet: Spread sequence

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
We investigate spread evolution by mesoscale convection from tiny initial condition uncertainty during a real event. There is significant variation among the systems in their propensity to interact with the jet stream, whereby variability in one system (due to convective and long‐wave radiative heating tendencies) tightly relates to Rossby‐like ...
