This requirement is increased by any rise in daily metabolic rate or cell turnover rate as in hyperthyroidism, pregnancy, and hemolytic anemia.

Folic Acid Deficiency Complicating Malaria
The American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 1970Abstract American marines in Vietnam were shown to have megaloblastic changes in bone marrow aspirates and an inappropriate reticulocyte response to anemia associated with malaria. Convalescence was prolonged because of delayed correction of anemia.

Folic Acid Deficiency and Iron Overload
Archives of Internal Medicine, 1970Two patients with iron overload and liver disease had folic acid deficiency. In one patient it was associated with elevation of serum iron level and reappearance of iron in hepatic cells. Treatment with folic acid was followed by decrease in both serum and hepatic cell iron levels.
