The hair follicle, or more correctly the pilo-sebaceous follicle, is an invagination of the epidermis. The floor, which is formed by a papilla gives insertion to the hair, which is a product of the cells of this papilla. A lateral diverticulum, the sebaceous gland (a compound racemose gland) secretes a fatty substance called sebum.
