A glycopeptide (M.Wt. 32 KDa) containing about 18% carbohydrate. In common with other pituitary hormones TSH, LH and the placental hormone hCG, it comprises a- and β-subunits, the α-subunit being common to all 4 peptide hormones. Biological activity is lost on dissociation of the subunits.

The Follicle Stimulating Hormone Receptor
1990Regulation and maintenance of Sertoli cell functions essential for spermatogenesis are primarily dependent on follitropin (FSH), a glycoprotein hormone that is elaborated by the anterior pituitary gland. The initial event in follitropin action is the specific binding of the hormone by high affinity follitropin receptors present on the Sertoli cell ...

Follicle-stimulating-hormone receptor and twinning
The Lancet, 2001Sir—Ayman Al-Hendy and colleagues report on the association between mutations of the follicle-stimulatinghormone receptor (FSHR) (Sept 9, p 914) and repeated twinning. They describe a woman, bearing two mutations in the receptor, one change at position 307 (alanine to threonine) and the other with a change at position 680 (asparagine to serine), who ...

Biosynthesis and Secretion of Follicle-Stimulating Hormone*
Endocrine Reviews, 1983THE ANTERIOR pituitary gland synthesizes and secretes three glycoprotein hormones. Two of these, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) are termed gonadotropins and exert divergent effects upon the gonads to regulate and maintain essential reproductive processes such as gametogenesis, steroidogenesis, and ovulation.

Norepinephrine in Graafian Follicles Is Depleted by Follicle-Stimulating Hormone*
Endocrinology, 1982The purpose of the present study was to measure norepinephrine (NE) in Graafian follicles and correlate changes in its concentration with circulating gonadotropins secreted endogenously or administered exogenously. Graafian follicles were removed from the ovaries of adult cycling rats. The follicles were pooled in groups of 10-13, and NE was determined

Follicle-Stimulating Hormone and Advanced Follicle Development in the Human
Archives of Medical Research, 2001The great majority of human oocytes is destined to undergo atresia. Only follicles able to respond to stimulation by follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) will enter the final stage of development and ovulate. While the role of FSH in early follicle development is unclear, late follicular development is FSH-dependent.

Pharmacokinetics of follicle-stimulating hormone: clinical significance
Fertility and Sterility, 1995To review studies that examine the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of endogenous, as well as several exogenous FSH preparations.Related studies were identified through a computerized bibliographic search.Initial pharmacodynamic studies were done in animal models and in women and men with either hypogonadotropic hypogonadism or suppressed ...

SIMULTANEOUS RADIOIMMUNOASSAY OF LUTEINIZING HORMONE AND FOLLICLE-STIMULATING HORMONE
Journal of Endocrinology, 1978The Medical Unit, The Princess Margaret Hospital, Christchurch 2, New Zealand (Revised manuscript received 21 August 1978) The frequent clinical and research requirement for measurement of both plasma luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) has prompted the development of a simultaneous radioimmunoassay for these two

Follicle-Stimulating Hormone Stimulates Spermatogenesis in the Adult Monkey*
Endocrinology, 1988A 2-fold increase in the numbers of germinal cells was observed in the seminiferous epithelium of cynomolgus monkeys treated with 15 IU FSH twice a day during 28 days. No effect was seen after 7 days of treatment. After 16 days only the numbers of Apale (Ap) spermatogonia had increased to 200% of the control level while the numbers of B spermatogonia ...
