A One-Dimensional (1D) Computational Fluid Dynamics Study of Fontan-Associated Liver Disease (FALD). [PDF]

open access: yesInt J Numer Method Biomed Eng
Fontan‐associated liver disease (FALD) is a disorder arising from congestion in the liver. This disease is prominent in patients with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS). Through perfusion analysis, we find that as FALD progresses, there are increased pressures and decreased flow to certain regions of liver tissue.

Effects of oral sildenafil after palliative procedures to increase pulmonary blood flow in cyanotic heart diseases

open access: yesJournal of Medicine in Scientific Research, 2020
Background Continuing efforts have been exerted to improve the outcome of palliative procedures for cyanotic congenital heart diseases. Sildenafil is known for the management of erectile dysfunction and pulmonary hypertension, but the cardiac benefits of

An alternate technique of performing total cavopulmonary connection without cardiopulmonary bypass

open access: yesAnnals of Pediatric Cardiology, 2023
Total cavopulmonary connection (Fontan) without using cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) may be superior to Fontan on CPB. In the experience of many, a Fontan operation without CPB may be associated with a reduced need for inotropic support, improved outcomes ...

Node Density Estimation in VANETs Using Received Signal Power [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Accurately estimating node density in Vehicular Ad hoc Networks, VANETs, is a challenging and crucial task. Various approaches exist, yet none takes advantage of physical layer parameters in a distributed fashion.

Computational analysis of serum-derived extracellular vesicle miRNAs in juvenile sheep model of single stage Fontan procedure

open access: yesExtracellular Vesicle, 2022
Patients with single ventricle heart defects requires a series of staged open-heart procedures, termed Fontan palliation. However, while lifesaving, these operations are associated with significant morbidity and early mortality.

Non diagnosed PAPVC induce large reverse venovenous shunt after modified Fontan surgery: A case report of a rare anomaly and embolization therapy [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Research, 2021
Fontan operation is a reliable palliative surgery for patients with single ventricle physiology. Still, the development of complication is common; one of these complications that need to interventional approach is veno-venous collaterals between systemic

Survival Data and Predictors of Functional Outcome an Average of 15 Years after the Fontan Procedure: The Pediatric Heart Network Fontan Cohort [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
ObjectiveMulticenter longitudinal outcome data for Fontan patients surviving into adulthood are lacking. The aim of this study was to better understand contemporary outcomes in Fontan survivors by collecting follow‐up data in a previously well ...

Increased Risk for Thromboembolism After Fontan Surgery: Considerations for Thromboprophylaxis

open access: yesFrontiers in Pediatrics, 2022
The Fontan circulation introduces an increased risk of thromboembolism which is associated with substantial mortality and morbidity. Adverse outcomes of thromboembolic complications post-Fontan surgery vary in both nature and severity, ranging from local

Functional hepatic deterioration determined by 13C-methacetin breath test is associated with impaired hemodynamics and late Fontan failure in adults

open access: yesFrontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine, 2022
BackgroundDespite improved survival a substantial number of Fontan patients eventually develop late failure. Fontan-associated liver disease (FALD) is the most frequent end-organ dysfunction.
