Ventricular Morphology and Outcomes in Fontan Circulation without Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome: A Single-Center's Experience

open access: yesReviews in Cardiovascular Medicine
Background: The impact of dominant ventricular morphology on Fontan patient outcomes remain controversial. This study evaluates long-term results of right ventricle (RV) dominance versus left ventricle (LV) dominance in Fontan circulation without ...

Computational Rheo‐Hydrodynamic Analysis of Non‐Newtonian Blood Flow Through a Tilted Ellipsoidal Stenosed Vascular Segment

open access: yesEngineering Reports, Volume 8, Issue 6, June 2026.
Non‐Newtonian blood flow through multiple tilted ellipsoidal stenoses is numerically investigated using the DeKee‐Turcotte‐Papanastasiou model. The results reveal asymmetric velocity fields, elevated wall shear stress, significant pressure drops, and shear‐dependent thermal effects, highlighting the critical hemodynamic risks associated with eccentric ...

Cardiovascular Health in Women—Across the Lifespan

open access: yesClinical Endocrinology, Volume 104, Issue 6, Page 539-555, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of mortality and morbidity among women worldwide. However, CVD continues to be perceived as a predominantly male issue. CVD in women therefore remains understudied, underrecognized and undertreated.

Association of Fontan Circulation With Gut Microbiome Derived Straight and Branched Short Chain Fatty Acids

open access: yesJournal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Volume 41, Issue 6, Page 1825-1836, June 2026.
Adults with Fontan circulation (n = 20) and matched controls underwent body composition, frailty testing, CPET, and NICaS hemodynamics. Plasma short‐chain fatty acids were quantified by LC–MS/MS. Fontan patients had higher straight and branched SCFAs, correlating with lower muscle mass, greater frailty, reduced VO2max, and worse resting/postexercise ...

Closing in on the perfect Fontan [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, 2014
Since the introduction of the Fontan operation more than 4 decades ago, many modifications to the operation have occurred and have been debated in the name of finding the ‘‘perfect’’ Fontan. Along the way, the ‘‘Ten Commandments’’ for a Fontan have been reduced to 4 or 5.

149 Fontan Conversions

open access: yesMethodist DeBakey Cardiovascular Journal, 2019
Patients with a functionally univentricular heart who have had an atriopulmonary Fontan are at risk for atrial dilatation, atrial arrhythmias, and progressive circulatory failure. Between 1994 and 2018, we performed 149 Fontan conversions with arrhythmia surgery and epicardial pacemaker placement at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago.
