No. 16: The State of Food Insecurity in Msunduzi Municipality, South Africa [PDF]
There is plenty of food in Msunduzi, in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province, but the urban poor regularly go hungry. This study of Msunduzi’s food security situation formed part of AFSUN’s baseline survey of eleven Southern African cities.

This work presents the characterization of MvoDUF2193, a Methanococcus voltae (Mvo) protein from the domain of unknown function (DUF) 2193 family. We demonstrate that MvoDUF2193 binds a single [4Fe–4S] cluster per subunit and that cluster occupancy regulates the transition from an apo tetramer to a [4Fe–4S] monomeric form. This structural transition is

Modelling food supply networks
The core objective of VALUMICS project www.valumics.eu is to develop approaches and tools to analyse the structure, dynamics, resilience and impact of food chains on food security, economic development and the environment. This article presents the work done by the H2020 VALUMICS project during its first year on system dynamics causality-based ...

Food waste within food supply chains: quantification and potential for change to 2050
Food waste in the global food supply chain is reviewed in relation to the prospects for feeding a population of nine billion by 2050. Different definitions of food waste with respect to the complexities of food supply chains (FSCs)are discussed.

A framework for food supply chain digitalization: lessons from Thailand
The promise of digitalization is enormous and nowhere is it more critical than in its potential to transform food supply chain. Consumers have become more educated and are demanding real-time updated information on foods they consumed through digital ...

Functional role and folding properties of the glucan‐binding domain of oral bacterial glucansucrase
The role of the glucan‐binding domain in Streptococcus sobrinus glucansucrase was examined, focusing on its impact on enzymatic activity, dextran binding, and structural stability of deletion mutants and a circularly permuted protein. Our research revealed that glucosyl transfer efficiency is linked to cooperative interdomain folding.

Exploring lipid diversity and minimalism to define membrane requirements for synthetic cells
Designing the lipid membrane of synthetic cells is a complex task, in which its various roles (among them solute transport, membrane protein support, and self‐replication) should all be integrated. In this review, we report the latest top‐down and bottom‐up advances and discuss compatibility and complexity issues of current engineering approaches ...

Elevated diversity of the supply chain boosts global food system resilience
Food supply shock is defined as a drastic shortage in food supply, which would likely threaten the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals 2: zero hunger.

Short Food Supply Chains (SFSC) as Local and Sustainable Systems
We distinguish different types of Short Food Supply Chains (SFSC); nevertheless, their common main characteristic relate to reduced numbers of intermediaries between farmers/food producers and consumers.
