Three-Dimensional Innate Mobility of the Human Foot on Coronally-Wedged Surfaces Using a Biplane X-Ray Fluoroscopy

open access: yesFrontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology, 2022
Improving our understanding on how the foot and ankle joints kinematically adapt to coronally wedged surfaces is important for clarifying the pathogenetic mechanism and possible interventions for the treatment and prevention of foot and lower leg ...

Continuum Mechanics Modeling of Flexible Spring Joints in Surgical Robots

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
A new mechanical model of a tendon‐actuated helical extension spring joint in surgical robots is built using Cosserat rod theory. The model can implicitly handle the unknown contacts between adjacent coils and numerically predict spring shapes from straight to significantly bent under actuation forces.

Kinematic characteristics of barefoot sprinting in habitually shod children [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ, 2018
Background Anecdotally, a wide variety of benefits of barefoot running have been advocated by numerous individuals. The influence of the alterations in the properties of the shoe on the running movement has been demonstrated in adults at submaximal ...

Compliant Pneumatic Feet with Real‐Time Stiffness Adaptation for Humanoid Locomotion

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
A compliant pneumatic foot with real‐time variable stiffness enables humanoid robots to adapt to changing terrains. Using onboard vision and pressure control, the foot modulates stiffness within each gait cycle, reducing impact forces and improving balance. The design, cast in soft silicone with embedded air chambers and Kevlar wrapping, offers durable,

Origami‐Inspired Structural Design for Aquatic‐Terrestrial Amphibious Robots

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This work presents a lightweight amphibious origami robot actuated by a single shape memory alloy wire. A rigid foldable origami structure with displacement amplification enables efficient terrestrial crawling and aquatic swimming. The addition of fan‐shaped units allows controllable turning in both environments.

Protocol for the Foot in Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis trial (FiJIA): a randomised controlled trial of an integrated foot care programme for foot problems in JIA [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Background: Foot and ankle problems are a common but relatively neglected manifestation of juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Studies of medical and non-medical interventions have shown that clinical outcome measures can be improved ...

Efficient and Robust Standing Postures of Quadruped Robots

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
A calibrated static framework estimates load, optimizes torques, and adapts posture so quadruped robots stand efficiently and robustly under external payloads, achieving up to 50% lower torque demand. Inspired by the natural posture adjustments of animals under external loading, this article presents an optimization‐based framework for minimizing joint

The development of a kinematic model to quantify in‐shoe foot motion [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Foot and Ankle Research, 2012
Study aim: To develop a kinematic model to quantify in-shoe foot kinematics during gait. Methods and material: Twenty-four participants (mean age - 21.8 yrs ± 3.5 yrs, height - 1.75 m ± 0.09 m and body mass - 71.0 kg ± 10.6 kg) were recruited.
