Radiative and mechanical feedback into the molecular gas in the Large Magellanic Cloud. I. N159W [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
We present Herschel SPIRE Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) observations of N159W, an active star-forming region in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). In our observations, a number of far-infrared cooling lines including CO(4-3) to CO(12-11), [CI] 609 ...

Reconstructing Old Chinese *‐ts Using Han‐Time Material

open access: yesTransactions of the Philological Society, EarlyView.
Abstract Baxter & Sagart (2014b) reconstruct *‐Vt‐s on the basis of Middle Chinese reflexes in ‐jH (from some OC *‐s) coupled with either etymological or graphic connections to words in Middle Chinese ‐t. This approach, while perfectly sound, can suffer from lack of etymological or graphic data, leading to missed reconstructions. Since Old Chinese *‐ts

Signature of mid‐Pleistocene lineages in the European silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) at its geographic distribution margin

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2021
In a conservation and sustainable management perspective, we identify the ecological, climatic, and demographic factors responsible for the genetic diversity patterns of the European silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) at its southwestern range margin ...

The effect of elevation on species richness in tropical forests depends on the considered lifeform: results from an East African mountain forest [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Elevation gradients in tropical forests have been studied but the analysis of patterns displayed by species richness and elevation have received little attention.

Warm Spring Weather Alters Calling Phenology of Four Sympatric Early‐Breeding Anurans

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
An unusually warm March in 2024 (“false spring”) followed by freezing temperatures allowed us to assess the impact of a weather event on an amphibian community. The calling activity of all four species was associated with increasing temperature, and the first date of calling was advanced by 11–18 days.

The Politics of Passage: Studying Checkpoints and Claim Making in Conflict‐affected Settings

open access: yesDevelopment and Change, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Roadblocks, or checkpoints, are obligatory passage points that are erected by entities claiming authority over a given crossing. They are often the most common everyday interface between civilians and armed actors in conflict‐affected contexts, but are overlooked in studies on either trade or authority amidst conflict.

Living on the edge – physiological tolerance to frost and drought explains range limits of 35 European tree species

open access: yesEcography, EarlyView.
Species distribution models are key to evaluate how climate change threatens European forests and tree species distributions. However, current models struggle to integrate ecophysiological processes. Mechanistic models are complex and have high parameter requirements.
