Modelling forage fish species distribution in the Canadian Salish Sea

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
Forage fish are small, schooling fish that play a vital role in marine ecosystems, serving as a primary food source for seabirds, marine mammals, and commercially important species such as salmon.

Asymmetric Evolution of Antennal Cell Types Underlies a Derived Ammonia‐Sensing Logic for Ecological Adaptation in Bactrocera dorsalis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Comparative antennal single‐nucleus transcriptomics reveals cell‐type‐dependent transcriptomic divergence in Bactrocera dorsalis, with similar structural cells but divergent sensory neurons. This neuronal diversification is associated with a distinct ammonia‐sensing pathway, linking female attraction to bird‐dropping‐associated cues with nutritional ...

Effects of Atlantic butterfish ( Peprilus triacanthus ) in diets of Common Terns ( Sterna hirundo ): a case study of climate change effects in the Gulf of Maine

open access: yesAvian Conservation and Ecology, 2023
Climate change and associated shifts in marine prey communities can alter food availability for foraging seabirds. This issue is illustrated in the Gulf of Maine by the northward shift of Atlantic butterfish ( Peprilus triacanthus ; hereafter butterfish)

MOF‐Derived Cu‐TiO2/Alginate Micromotors for Buoyancy‐Regulated 3D Motion

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
In this work, cyanobacteria‐inspired sodium alginate (SA)/Cu‐TiO2/Fe3O4 hydrogel micromotors generate and encapsulate O2 microvesicles upon light irradiation, enabling buoyancy‐mediated Z‐axis upward migration and surface enrichment at the light‐exposed water‐air surface.

Initiative, Personality and Leadership in Pairs of Foraging Fish

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
Studies of coordinated movement have found that, in many animal species, bolder individuals are more likely to initiate movement and shyer individuals to follow. Here, we show that in pairs of foraging stickleback fish, leadership is not merely a passive consequence of temperamental differences.

Hypothalamic POMC Neurons Gate the Fear‐Feeding Trade‐Off

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Hungry animals must continually arbitrate between feeding and defensive behaviors when confronted with potential threats. We show that hypothalamic POMC neurons engage CRH‐expressing stress circuits and downstream hormonal responses to coordinate this behavioral selection between competing behaviors.

Quorum Decision-Making in Foraging Fish Shoals

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
Quorum responses provide a means for group-living animals to integrate and filter disparate social information to produce accurate and coherent group decisions. A quorum response may be defined as a steep increase in the probability of group members performing a given behaviour once a threshold minimum number of their group mates already performing ...

Blocking Honeybee Preference for Neonicotinoids by Interfering With Dopamine Signaling

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Honeybees (Apis mellifera) paradoxically prefer nectar containing the harmful neonicotinoid thiamethoxam. This preference is associated with transient brain dopamine elevation during proboscis extension reflex (PER) responses and active feeding, and is reduced by the dopamine receptor antagonist fluphenazine.

Combined fishing and climate forcing in the southern Benguela upwelling ecosystem: an end-to-end modelling approach reveals dampened effects.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
The effects of climate and fishing on marine ecosystems have usually been studied separately, but their interactions make ecosystem dynamics difficult to understand and predict.

Temporary Programs, Lasting Questions: Ad Hoc Assistance in the U.S. Farm Safety Net

open access: yesApplied Economic Perspectives and Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Large ad hoc assistance programs have returned to U.S. farm policy since 2017, operating alongside a more developed safety net built around federally subsidized crop insurance, Title I commodity programs, and standing disaster assistance. This paper reviews the renewed use of ad hoc assistance, documents its recent scale using USDA data, and ...
