A developmental scale for perennial forage grasses based on the decimal code framework

open access: yesGrass and Forage Science, 2011
Accurate descriptions of developmental stages in perennial forage grasses are important for management decisions during the growing season. It would be advantageous to have a scale and index equivalent to those for other grasses such as cereals.

Forage Yield of Grass‐alfalfa and Grass‐forage Kochia Mixtures on Semiarid Rangelands

Forage & Grazinglands, 2011
Increased productivity of semiarid western United States grazing lands is possible with appropriate plant materials. This study compared late summer forage yield of ‘Vavilov’ Siberian wheatgrass (Agropyron fragile) and ‘Mustang’ Altai wildrye (Leymus angustus) in binary mixtures with two alfalfas (Medicago sativa) and two forage kochias (Kochia ...

Grasses and grazers in arid rangelands: Impact of sheep management on forage and non-forage grass populations

Journal of Environmental Management, 2019
Ecological modeling that includes plant population processes as a critical determinant of vegetation dynamics is useful for sustainable rangeland management. However, we know little about how long-term sheep grazing pressure drives the plant community structure through changes in different native grass species at both individual and population levels ...

Improving palatability of grass forages

Forage Crops and Grasses

2016
Fodder crops and grasses harbour large number of mealybugs throughout the world (Table 66.1). Though a number of mealybugs are recorded on grasses and fodder crops, only some are known to cause economic damage.

Nitrogen utilization by forage grasses

Canadian Journal of Plant Science, 2000
The efficient utilization of nitrogen (N) in grass production is essential to reduce the risks of water and air pollution, and the costs of production. Recent findings in grass physiology and agronomy should help in developing new tools to improve N utilization efficiency.

Cytology and genetics of forage grasses

The Botanical Review, 1961
The progress in genetics and cytogenetics of the Gramineae during the past 14 years appears to be fairly comparable in quantity and quality with that made prior to this period. Chromosome numbers are known for more than twice as many species of grasses as were known 14 years ago.

Fungal endophytes of forage grasses

Proceedings / Indian Academy of Sciences, 1985
Forage grasses (e.g., Lolium spp. andFestuca spp.) have long been known to harbour fungi which maintain an intercellular relationship with leaf tissue of the host. These endophytic fungi are considered to be the source of toxins which accumulate in infected grasses and are the cause of physiological disorders in grazing sheep and cattle.
