Dry matter yields and hydrological properties of three perennial grasses of a semi-arid environment in East Africa [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Enteropogon macrostachyus (Bush rye), Cenchrus ciliaris L. (African foxtail grass) and Eragrostis superba Peyr (Maasai love grass) are important perennial rangeland grasses in Kenya.

Hemp Cultivation and Crop Diversification: Implications for Ecosystem Services in Kentucky

open access: yesApplied Economic Perspectives and Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study examines the ecosystem benefits of expanding hemp cultivation by assessing its impact on crop diversity. Using scenario‐based simulations and fixed‐effect panel regressions with county‐level data in Kentucky, we find that increased hemp acreage tends to enhance crop diversity, improving water quality and bird diversity.

Assessing Warm-Season Annual Grasses to Increase Forage Inventory

open access: yes, 2022
Summers are expected to continue to increase in heat/dryness in the Northeast, causing issues pertaining to forage production during the summer to worsen. Many pastures grow cool season grasses, even during the summer.

Low Participation and Risk Reduction Potential of Supplemental Crop Insurance in the United States

open access: yesApplied Economic Perspectives and Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Federally subsidized crop insurance is a cornerstone of U.S. farm risk management, yet policies with the greatest share of participation only trigger indemnities after losses exceed 15%. Supplemental insurance was introduced to cover part of this deductible, but participation remains largely unchanged.

Fatty Acids, α-Tocopherol, β-Carotene and Lutein Contents in Forage Legumes, Forbs, and a Grass-Clover Mixture [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Fresh forages are an important natural source of vitamins and fatty acids in ruminant diets, and their concentrations in forage species are important for the quality of animal-derived foods such as dairy and meat products.

Relationship between nutritional composition and fibre digestibility in tropical forages compared to temperate forages

open access: yesItalian Journal of Animal Science
The study aimed to analyse variability in nutrient concentration and fibre digestibility in forage legumes and grasses from tropical and temperate regions and identify forage species with similar fibre concentration and digestibility.

Agronomic evaluation of 15 warm season grasses grown in temporarily waterlogged soils in Northeastern Argentina

open access: yesTropical Grasslands-Forrajes Tropicales
Soils with temporarily waterlogged conditions are common in Northeastern Argentina. Fifteen accessions and hybrids of cultivated and native warm season grasses (Acroceras macrum, Urochloa species, Hemarthria altissima and Paspalum species) were planted ...

Complementary or Competitive? Emerging Interactions Between Restoration and Protection in the Conservation Reserve Program

open access: yesApplied Economic Perspectives and Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The USDA's Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) delivers environmental benefits to society by enrolling cropland and grasslands to reestablish or safeguard long‐term vegetative cover. In recent years, the CRP has dramatically increased grassland enrollment while cropland enrollment has been in steady decline. This paper uses descriptive analysis,

Forage seeding in rangelands increases production and prevents weed invasion

open access: yesCalifornia Agriculture, 2017
Increasing forage productivity in the Sierra foothill rangelands would help sustain the livestock industry as land availability shrinks and lease rates rise, but hardly any studies have been done on forage selections.
