The effect of cell wall degrading enzymes on the preservation of grass and on the silage intake and digestibility in sheep

open access: yesAgricultural and Food Science, 1990
Two experiments were carried out to study the effects of cell wall degrading enzymes as silage additive. A primary growth of timothy was cut with a mower and picked up with a precision-chop forage harvester in Exp.

Evaluation of Lolium perenne L. cv. AberDart and AberDove for silage production [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
peer-reviewedThe objective of this study was to assess the value, for silage production, of intermediateheading Lolium perenne L. cultivars, AberDart and AberDove (diploid), bred for increased water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC) concentrations, relative to

Moose indifferent to canopy loss from forest disturbance by bark beetles

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
Moose showed strikingly similar patterns of habitat selection before and after widespread forest disturbance following an infestation of bark beetles. Our findings indicate that beetle‐kill does not appreciably alter habitat quality for moose and highlight the importance of riparian areas in sustaining moose as they contend with changing forests ...

Monitoring mercury across the National Wildlife Refuge System using a biosentinel approach

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
We measured mercury concentrations in 1,356 dragonfly larvae collected from 30 National Wildlife Refuges across the United States and found wide variability among refuges, spanning the full range reported for other protected lands. Using a management‐focused mercury impairment index, 80% of refuges contained sites classified as moderate or higher risk.

Environmental and temporal factors affecting record white‐tailed deer antler characteristics in Ontario, Canada

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
Antler characteristics are influenced by a combination of genetics, age, and environmental factors, notably habitat quality and resource availability. In this study, we explored how diverse environmental factors, including climate and land cover composition, affect antler size, tine configuration, and the distribution of record‐scoring white‐tailed ...
