Image‐based and biochemical multimodal phenotyping for explainable classification of chia (Salvia hispanica L.) genotypes

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, EarlyView.
Abstract BACKGROUND This study developed an explainable machine learning framework integrating morphological, color, and biochemical characteristics for classifying chia (Salvia hispanica L.) genotypes. A dataset was assembled from 1200 seed images spanning four genotypes, from which 17 morphological and color features were extracted.

Ringtail (Bassariscus astutus) survival in southwestern Oregon

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
We captured and monitored radio‐collared ringtails over 2 years to estimate monthly and annual survival rates. We found that annual survival rates were much higher within forested landscapes in Oregon than for populations in the southwestern United States.

Validating antler‐ and movement‐based estimates of caribou reproduction using video camera collars Validation des estimations de la reproduction du caribou basées sur la rétention des bois et  sur le déplacement à l'aide de colliers‐caméras

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
We used GPS video camera collar data from barren‐ground caribou in the Porcupine and Western Arctic herds to validate antler‐ and movement‐based methods for estimating annual reproductive metrics. Antler retention was highly accurate for estimating parturition, but the movement methods we tested performed marginally for estimating parturition and ...

Burrow use by Saharan striped polecat (Poecilictis libyca) in an agricultural area of central Tunisia

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
Saharan striped polecats in agricultural landscapes use many burrows (30–35 per season), facilitated by sandy soils. Burrow sharing is rare and mainly occurs between males and females during mating. Habitat use shifts seasonally, reflecting disturbance and soil conditions. Maintaining stable sandy habitats may be critical for persistence.

Recovery of southern mountain caribou habitat following wildfire in Ulkatcho territory, British Columbia, Canada

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
Caribou forage lichens were present in post‐burn lodgepole pine stands multiple decades before stem‐density was likely open enough to attract wintering caribou. We posit that the prolonged self‐thinning of lodgepole pine after fire may be a greater limiting factor than lichen abundance for habitat recovery in lodgepole pine forests.

Recovery of great blue herons (Ardea herodias) within the Chesapeake Bay

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
We surveyed great blue herons throughout the tidal reach of the Chesapeake Bay in 2013 and mapped 423 colonies supporting 15,094 pairs. The population has increased more than four‐fold since the mid‐1970s. Colony size has declined. Invasion of colonies by bald eagles may be driving a change in spatial structure.
