Patent foramen ovale

Nature Reviews Disease Primers, 2016
Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is the most common congenital heart abnormality of fetal origin and is present in approximately ∼25% of the worldwide adult population. PFO is the consequence of failed closure of the foramen ovale, a normal structure that exists in the fetus to direct blood flow directly from the right to the left atrium, bypassing the ...

Patent foramen ovale

Expert Review of Cardiovascular Therapy, 2005
Patent foramen ovale is incriminated in patients with cryptogenic stroke; however, concrete evidence that closure of patent foramen ovale using various devices is superior to continued medical therapy is not yet available. Controlled randomized trials are well underway to address this issue.

THE ENLARGED FORAMEN OVALE

American Journal of Roentgenology, 1973
Well-defined smooth margins of an enlarged foramen ovale have been characteristically associated with fifth nerve neurinomas. We have shown similar changes in other entities such as chordoma, cylindroma, meningioma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. The changes which suggest specific roentgenologic findings are discussed.

Accessory oval foramen

Annals of Anatomy - Anatomischer Anzeiger, 2001
We describe an opening with smooth walls in front and medial to foramen ovale which leads to an oblique canal directed towards the fossa pterygoidea. The canal was up to 2.3 mm long and opened near the root of the pterygoid process. We called this opening "foramen ovale accessorium", and found it in 48 of 124 anatomical specimens.

Patent Foramen Ovale

Cardiology Clinics, 2013
Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a common developmental anomaly that allows for the passage of blood and other substances from the venous to the arterial circulation. The study of PFO closure has been challenging due to widely available off-label closures performed outside the clinical trial setting.

Patent Foramen Ovale and Migraine

The American Journal of Cardiology, 2006
AbstractMigraine is a common neurological disorder with a great impact on the quality of life and social activities. The patent foramen ovale (PFO) is an intra‐atrial right‐to‐left shunt with a prevalence of 25% in the general population. An increased prevalence is found in patients with migraine, especially in migraine with aura.

Patent Foramen Ovale and Stroke

Mayo Clinic Proceedings, 2004
A patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a frequent remnant of embryological development with clinical importance in thromboembolism, paradoxical embolism, stroke, platypnea-orthodeoxia, decompression sickness, and migraine headache. The proposed mechanisms of stroke with PFO include paradoxical embolization, in situ thrombosis within the canal of the PFO ...

Patent foramen ovale and migraine

Current Pain and Headache Reports, 2007
Results from several observational studies indicate an association between migraine and patent foramen ovale (PFO). Several biological mechanisms have been proposed to explain this link, including shared genetic inheritance. However, there is currently insufficient evidence to support a causal link between PFO and migraine.

The persistent foramen ovale and migraine

Revue Neurologique, 2005
There is association between migraine, particularly migraine with aura, and large persistent foramen ovale (PFO) and other right-to-left shunts. Migraine is often improved by closure of a PFO in patients who have a large shunt. Inheritance of migraine is linked to the inheritance of large atrial shunts in some families.

Patent Foramen Ovale Closure

Annals of Internal Medicine, 2018
Two meta-analyses in this issue make a case that the totality of available data favors patent foramen ovale closure to prevent recurrent stroke in patients who, after work-up, are found to have pat...
