Patent foramen ovale associated with carcinoid heart disease
The American Journal of Cardiology, 1964Abstract Two cases of the carcinoid syndrome with valvular disease of the heart showed a reductior in arterial oxygen saturation due to right to left shunt. In one case, necropsy revealed a functionally patent foramen ovale as the cause for the shunt; in the other case a presumptive clinical diagnosis of patent foramen ovale was made.

Patent foramen ovale in carcinoid heart disease
International Journal of Cardiology, 2010Carcinoid heart disease (CHD) is an uncommon valvular heart disease that may occur in the case of carcinoid syndrome, due to the release of serotonin. Right-sided CHD is more frequent than left-sided CHD because of inactivation of serotonin by the lung.

Assessment of patent foramen ovale in carcinoid heart disease
American Heart Journal, 2006Carcinoid syndrome may involve right carcinoid heart disease (CHD), secondary to the release of vasoactive substances. Left CHD is rare, as the inactivation of serotonin by the lung protects the left heart. We attempted to evaluate the prevalence of CHD and patent foramen ovale (PFO) with serial contrast transthoracic echocardiographic studies and to ...

A Change of Heart: Reopening of a Foramen Ovale
Canadian Journal of Cardiology, 2014Platypnea-orthodeoxia is a rare syndrome characterized by dyspnea and hypoxemia that is exacerbated by assuming an upright position. The most common cause is intracardiac shunting through an atrial septal defect or patent foramen ovale (PFO). We present a 63-year-old man with dyspnea after right pneumonectomy for lung cancer, who was found to have a ...

Patent foramen ovale presenting as refractory hypoxemia after heart transplantation
Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography, 1997Hypoxemia can be an early life-threatening complication of orthotopic heart transplantation. Commonly, hypoxemia after orthotopic heart transplantation is due to pulmonary hypertension or pulmonary complications. Rarely, structural defects either in the donor or recipient heart can lead to life-threatening hypoxemia.

Fetal Heart Echocardiography Focusing Foramen Oval
2015A 27-year-old pregnant woman (gravida 2) was referred to our echocardiography laboratory for fetal heart echocardiography. Her first infant had died of unknown reason at 7 months.

Postnatal Course of Hypoplastic Left Heart Complex and Restrictive Foramen Ovale
Pediatric Cardiology, 2009Hypoplastic left heart complex is a cardiac malformation at the mildest end of the spectrum of hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Recently, biventricular repair was proposed for such patients without retrograde flow to the ascending aorta. However, the preoperative course of these patients is unclear.

PATENT FORAMEN OVALE, FRIEND OR FOE IN HEART FAILURE PATIENTS?
Journal of the American College of Cardiology, 2019Foramen ovale, a remnant of the fetal circulation has been shown to remain patent in 25% of our population. We aim to evaluate whether the presence of a patent foramen ovale (PFO) has a positive impact on selected cardiovascular outcomes in patients with Congestive Heart Failure (CHF ...

Relation Between Inheritance of Cyanotic Congenital Heart Disease and Persistent Foramen Ovale
The American Journal of Cardiology, 2009Cyanotic congenital heart disease (CCHD) usually occurs sporadically, but occasionally it is familial without evidence of Mendelian inheritance. The investigators previously reported an association between dominant inheritance of clinically significant atrial shunts (large persistent foramina ovale and small atrial septal defects) and migraine with ...
