Premature closure of the foramen ovale and hypoplasia of the left heart
International Journal of Cardiology, 1984Although premature closure of the foramen ovale has been proposed as a possible cause of hypoplastic left heart syndrome, very few such cases have been described. We have seen two examples of the combination and no associated malformations. In both the foramen was firmly closed on its left atrial aspect and the dimensions of the left sided structures ...

Fetal Pulmonary Venous Flow and Restrictive Foramen Ovale in Hypoplastic Left Heart
Ultraschall in der Medizin - European Journal of Ultrasound, 2012Hypoplastic left heart (HLH) with intact or restrictive interatrial communication (HLH-IAS/RAS) is associated with high mortality rates. The object was to correlate pulmonary venous (PV) Doppler spectra and direct foramen ovale (FO) assessment with the neonatal need for early atrial septostomy (EAS) and neonatal outcome. We reviewed all prenatal ...

Patent foramen ovale and migraine: an example of heart–brain interaction
Nature Clinical Practice Neurology, 2008Several studies have indicated that a relationship exists between patent foramen ovale (PFO) and the incidence of migraine; however, the nature of the relationship and whether PFO closure could be used as a treatment for migraine are controversial. In this Viewpoint, Gian Paolo Anzola lists evidence in support of a relationship between PFO and migraine

Despite advances in prenatal diagnosis and postnatal intervention/surgery methods, patients with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) and coexisting foramen oval restriction still achieve high mortality rates. Our objective was to determine survival predictors and to find answers to, why restriction develops in some, but not others. We performed a ...

Heart Transplantation Complicated by a Patent Foramen Ovale of the Recipient Atrial Septum
The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 1996A patent foramen ovale after heart transplantation is a relatively uncommon occurrence. We report a case of a 58-year-old man with profound hypoxemia after orthotopic cardiac transplantation for end-stage ischemic cardiomyopathy. Transesophageal echocardiography demonstrated the presence of a patent foramen ovale in the recipient atrial cuff.

Percutaneous closure of a patent foramen ovale in left-sided carcinoid heart disease
Nature Clinical Practice Cardiovascular Medicine, 2007A 51-year-old woman with a 5-year history of metastatic small bowel carcinoid disease developed fatigue and gradually worsening dyspnea on exertion, over 6 months.Physical examination, transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, and aortography.Left-sided carcinoid disease associated with a patent foramen ovale.Percutaneous transcatheter ...

Closure of a patent foramen ovale and tricuspid valve replacement after heart transplantation
The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 1996Patent foramen ovale has been noted after cardiac transplantation. Rarely is surgical intervention warranted. In this communication we report a case of severe tricuspid regurgitation and paradoxical embolism secondary to a patent foramen ovale in a patient 19 months after heart transplantation.

Stroke in congenital heart disease and patent foramen ovale.
The Israel Medical Association journal : IMAJ, 2007Congenital heart disease is usually regarded as an esoteric field of medicine, dealt with primarily by dedicated specialists. However, over the last two decades, increased attention has been given by the medical profession, the media and the general public to the possible association between a minor and common congenital heart defect, namely patent ...

Peripheral M mode contrast echocardiograms were performed at rest and during the Valsalva maneuver in 11 patients with patent foramen ovale and normal right heart pressures documented by catheterization studies. Positive contrast studies (at least five clearly identifiable contrast echoes appearing in the left heart) were obtained in three patients (27
