When Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) Can Cause Trouble-A Misplacement of Pacemaker Lead Into the Left Ventricle. [PDF]

open access: yesCase Rep Cardiol
Misplacement of pacemakers lead into the left ventricle (LV) is a rare but clinically important complication, often facilitated by unrecognized intracardiac shunts such as a patent foramen ovale (PFO). Early recognition is essential to avoid systemic embolization and ensure safe device function.

Hypoplastic left heart syndrome with in utero closed foramen ovale: case report. [PDF]

open access: yesRevista portuguesa de cardiologia : orgao oficial da Sociedade Portuguesa de Cardiologia = Portuguese journal of cardiology : an official journal of the Portuguese Society of Cardiology, 2006
We report a case of a newborn with a prenatal diagnosis of hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS), referred at 37 weeks of gestation. The fetal echocardiogram had shown classic morphologic aspects of HLHS with patent mitral valve and aortic valve atresia. The atrial septum was thickened and the foramen ovale (FO) appeared to be patent.

Percutaneous closure of PFO in patients with reduced oxygen saturation at rest and during exercise : short- and long-term results [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Background. A patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a rare cause of hypoxemia and clinical symptoms of dyspnea. Due to a right-to-left shunt, desaturated blood enters the systemic circulation in a subset of patients resulting in dyspnea and a subsequent ...

Comparison of Two Different Pulsed Radiofrequency Modes for Prevention of Postherpetic Neuralgia in Elderly Patients with Acute/Subacute Trigeminal Herpes Zoster

open access: yesNeuromodulation: Technology at the Neural Interface, EarlyView., 2021
Abstract Objective Trigeminal postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is often refractory to treatment. Pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) neuromodulation can help in preventing PHN after herpes zoster. This study aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of two different PRF modes on gasserian ganglion neuromodulation in elderly patients with acute/subacute trigeminal ...

A sudden right-to-left shunt: the importance of evaluating patent foramen ovale during exercise

open access: yesMonaldi Archives for Chest Disease, 2023
A 55-year-old male affected by heart failure with reduced ejection fraction and a history of a transient cerebrovascular accident was accepted to the Cardiology Department for worsening dyspnoea.

Case report: Malignant vasovagal reflex syndrome during percutaneous transcatheter closure of patent foramen ovale

open access: yesFrontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine, 2023
Malignant vasovagal reflex syndrome can be induced by pulling of cardiac tissue during percutaneous transcatheter closure of patent foramen ovale. In this case, a patient presented with a malignant vasovagal reflex syndrome characterized by decreased ...

PFO Closure after Pulmonary Valve Intervention in Patients with Hypoxemia Due to Right-to-Left Intracardiac Shunt

open access: yesMethodist DeBakey Cardiovascular Journal, 2022
Four patients with pulmonary valve (PV) disease and patent foramen ovale (PFO) presented with dyspnea on exertion. Work-up revealed hypoxemia secondary to right-to-left intracardiac shunt. We demonstrate that correction of the primary culprit right heart

Creation of high position fetal balloon atrial septoplasty for hypoplastic left heart syndrome and highly restrictive atrial septum: A case report and literature review

open access: yesJournal of Interventional Medicine, 2020
Background: Fetal balloon atrial septoplasty (BAS) is performed through the restrictive foramen ovale in fetal cases with established hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) and an intact or highly restrictive atrial septum (RAS).

Progressive Anatomical Closure of Foramen Ovale in Normal Neonatal Mouse Hearts [PDF]

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, 2012
AbstractIn the prenatal heart, right‐to‐left atrial shunting of blood through the foramen ovale is essential for proper circulation. After birth, as the pulmonary circulation is established, the foramen ovale functionally closes as a result of changes in the relative pressure of the two atrial chambers, ensuring the separation of oxygen depleted venous
