The brain's heart — Therapeutic opportunities for patent foramen ovale (PFO) and neurovascular disease [PDF]
Patent foramen ovale (PFO), a common congenital cardiac abnormality, is a connection between the right and left atria in the heart. As a "back door to the brain", PFO can serve as a conduit for paradoxical embolism, allowing venous thrombi to enter the arterial circulation, avoiding filtration by the lungs, and causing ischemic stroke.

Prenatal diagnosis and clinical course of restrictive foramen ovale in otherwise normal heart
Purpose : Premature narrowing of the foramen ovale is rare but serious clinical entity. Prenatal narrowing or obstruction of the foramen ovale shows symptoms such as right heart failure, fetal hydrops, triscupid regurgitation, left heart obstructive disease, and supraventricular tachycardia.

Heart Transplantation Complicated by a Patent Foramen Ovale of the Recipient Atrial Septum
A patent foramen ovale after heart transplantation is a relatively uncommon occurrence. We report a case of a 58-year-old man with profound hypoxemia after orthotopic cardiac transplantation for end-stage ischemic cardiomyopathy. Transesophageal echocardiography demonstrated the presence of a patent foramen ovale in the recipient atrial cuff.

Percutaneous closure of PFO in patients with reduced oxygen saturation at rest and during exercise : short- and long-term results [PDF]
Background. A patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a rare cause of hypoxemia and clinical symptoms of dyspnea. Due to a right-to-left shunt, desaturated blood enters the systemic circulation in a subset of patients resulting in dyspnea and a subsequent ...
