Piezoelectric force sensor for scanning force microscopy
Sensors and Actuators A: Physical, 1994Abstract A dynamic scanning force microscope using a piezoelectric force sensor has been constructed. The complexity of the conventional dynamic SFM is due to the detector used for measuring the vibration amplitude of the cantilever. Our sensor enables direct detection of signals related to the lever amplitude by a piezoelectric layer formed on the ...

A magnetostrictive force sensor
Review of Scientific Instruments, 1994A new magnetostrictive force sensor is presented and its operation is verified experimentally. The sensor has a single excitation coil and a single detection coil, which utilize the magnetostrictive effect. The cores of the coils function as ‘‘spring elements’’ of the sensor, and are linked together by rigid end plates.

The SI (Systeme International) unit of measurement for force F is the „Newton“ (N), which is one of the 7 base units of that system. In practice, large forces are usually expressed in kN (kilonewton) or MN (meganewton) while for small forces, the mN (millinewton) is used.

The sensor has an optical fiber (3) arranged between a part (1) and another part, where the optical fiber comprises a detecting unit (5) for detecting deformations and/or tensions of the optical fiber transverse to longitudinal axis. A section is mechanically connected with the parts in such a manner that forces or moments in the section of the optical

Inertial Force Sensors — Accelerometers
1996This chapter introduces specific force sensors, or, as traditionally known in the technical literature, accelerometers. The subject is treated at both the sensor and the system level, that is, it considers both how, and what it measures on moving vehicles.
