Coordinated Architectural and Chemical Reinforcement in the Crushing Mandible of a Soldier Termite
The crushing mandible of a soldier termite withstands substantial biting loads despite lacking mineral. Its cuticle is partitioned: convex teeth pair hardness and zinc enrichment with aligned chitin fibers for contact durability, while stiffer concave regions between teeth carry bending loads.

Mono‐Material Polydisulfides for Pressure Sensitive Adhesive Tapes With Closed‐Loop Recyclability
A high‐performance pressure‐sensitive adhesive (PSA) tape is developed where both the adhesive layer and plastic backing layer can be recycled back to monomer in a closed‐loop cycle. Both layers of the tape are composed of analogous polydisulfide copolymers using only two unique monomers, thus giving it a mono‐material design and enabling recycling of ...

Two-Molecule Force Spectroscopy on Proteins
ACS Nano, 2023Many elastomeric proteins, which play important roles in a wide range of biological processes, exist as parallel/antiparallelly arranged dimers or multimers to perform their mechanobiological functions. For example, in striated muscle sarcomeres, the giant muscle protein titin exists as hexameric bundles to mediate the passive elasticity of muscles ...

New tools for force spectroscopy
Ultramicroscopy, 2005Force curves using atomic force microscopy have been proposed as a new tool to probe the conformation of adsorbed polymers and interactions between molecules through the analysis of the rupture distributions. We describe an algorithm for the computer-assisted detection of ruptures in force curves.

Molecular Force Spectroscopy on Cells
Annual Review of Physical Chemistry, 2015Molecular force spectroscopy has become a powerful tool to study how mechanics regulates biology, especially the mechanical regulation of molecular interactions and its impact on cellular functions. This force-driven methodology has uncovered a wealth of new information of the physical chemistry of molecular bonds for various biological systems.

Weak-noncovalent interactions govern structural cohesion and mediate most of life’s functions from the outer membrane surface to the interior nucleus of a cell. On laboratory time scales, the energy landscape of a weak bond is fully explored by Brownian-thermal excitations, and energy barriers along its dissociation pathway(s) become encoded in a rate ...
