Temporal changes in the dietary niche of sympatric seals provides insight into the role of competition in population declines

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
Competition theory suggests that interspecific prey competition can result in changes to the dietary niche, but obtaining timeseries of data from sympatric species experiencing temporal variation in competition is challenging. Scotland is an important area for two species of seals, but over the past 20 years, populations of harbour seals Phoca vitulina

The Effects of Forced Molt Treatment on Selected Steroids in Hens

open access: yesPoultry Science, 1982
Abstract A study was conducted to determine the effects of an environmentally induced forced molt on concentrations of plasma progesterone (P), corticosteroids (CS), corticosterone binding globulin binding capacity (CBGBC), and liver corticosteroids (LCS) during early forced molt. Laying hens were placed into two environmental control chambers.

Spraying drones: efficacy of integrating an avian repellent with drone hazing to elicit blackbird flock dispersal and abandonment of sunflower fields

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Multiple management strategies exist to combat bird damage to agriculture. We explored combining two tools, drones as frightening devices and an avian repellent, to assess effectiveness of an integrated method to deter large flocks on complex landscapes. We evaluated the ability of a spraying drone (DJI Agras MG‐1P) deploying Avian Control (i.e. active

Influence of the natural dyes bixin and curcumin in the shelf life of eggs from laying hens in the second production cycle - doi: 10.4025/actascianimsci.v34i2.12096

open access: yesActa Scientiarum: Animal Sciences, 2011
This study was developed to evaluate the effect of adding natural pigments on the storage of eggs from laying hens in the second production cycle submitted to diets based on corn and low-tannin sorghum.

Using programmable infusion pump in avian species – a validation methodology in geese

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Wildlife face anthropogenic and natural stressors that affect their physiology and behaviour. The activity of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis and glucocorticoid (GC) production is intrinsically linked with energy regulation and environmental stressors.

Cobalt and vitamin B12 in diets for commercial laying hens on the second cycle of production

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Poultry Science, 2003
The supplementation of cobalt and vitamin B12 in diets for commercial laying hens on the second production cycle was studied. Four hundred and eighty light commercial laying hens, Lohmann LSL, were used at initial phase of forced molting laying period ...

A Research on Egg Qualities of Early Age Force Molted Commerical Layer

open access: yesTurkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences, 1997
The primary aim of this research is to investigate egg qualities of a commercial layer which was force molted as a result of depressed egg prices. Variations in some egg-shell quality measurements related to age and their interactions were also searched.

Nesting ecology of an ice‐associated seabird, Kittlitz's murrelet, at the northern edge of its range

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, EarlyView.
We studied the Kittlitz's murrelet, an ice‐associated seabird of conservation concern, at the northern edge of its range. Over a 2‐year period, we estimated nest density and success at 2 sites, captured and telemetered nesting murrelets, and tested the use of a thermal camera to improve nest detection.

Dietary Phosphorus Requirements of Force-Molted Leghorn Hens

open access: yesPoultry Science, 1981
Abstract Two studies were conducted to determine the phosphorus requirements of force-molted Leghorn hens. In the first study, diets containing .8, .6, or .4% total phosphorus and 4% calcium were fed. In the second study diets with levels of .7, .6, .5, or .4% total phosphorus and 3.8% calcium were fed. Decreasing the phosphorus level improved shell

Calcitonin‐like diuretic hormone influences reproduction in adult female Rhodnius prolixus

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Highlights • CT/DH‐like immunoreactivity is present in female reproductive tissues • CT/DH receptor transcripts are expressed in the fat body and ovaries • RNAi knockdown of CT/DH receptors reduces egg number and hatching rate • Rhopr‐CT/DH increases RhoprVg1 and RhoprVgR expression in ovaries in vitro • Rhopr‐CT/DH stimulates oviduct contractions in a
