Classification of foreign accents
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2011Regional dialects and foreign accents account for a significant source of between-talker variability. The auditory free classification task—in which listeners freely group talkers based on audio samples—has been a useful tool for examining listeners' cognitive representations of regional dialects (e.g., Clopper and Pisoni, 2007) and was employed here ...

The Foreign Accent Syndrome: A Reconsideration
Brain and Language, 1996This study compared the post-CVA speech of a patient presenting with the foreign accent syndrome (FAS) to both a premorbid baseline for that patient and to similarly analyzed data from an earlier reported case of FAS. Rapid adaptation to foreign-accented English
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2004This study explored the perceptual benefits of brief exposure to non-native speech. Native English listeners were exposed to English sentences produced by non-native speakers. Perceptual processing speed was tracked by measuring reaction times to visual probe words following each sentence.

Journal of Communication Disorders, 2005This paper reports the case of a 32-year-old Dutch speaking woman who presented with foreign accent syndrome (FAS). There are good reasons to believe that the speech disturbance in this patient was of psychogenic origin. This case suggests that attested brain damage is not a prerequisite for a speech disorder to qualify as FAS and that FAS is not ...

Understanding foreign-accented speech
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2004Why is foreign-accented speech hard to understand? In one view, foreign-accented speech intelligibility is poor due to its marked deviation from the native talker norm. An alternative view claims that if the talkers and listeners shared knowledge systems are sufficiently aligned with each other, foreign-accented speech intelligibility can be good ...
