Estimating vegetation cover from high-resolution satellite data to assess grassland degradation in the Georgian Caucasus [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
In the Georgian Caucasus, unregulated grazing has damaged grassland vegetation cover and caused erosion. Methods for monitoring and control of affected territories are urgently needed.

Leaftronics: Bio‐Fractal Scaffolds From Leaf Venation for Low‐Waste Electronics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
“Leaftronics” transforms naturally evolved leaf venation into quasi‐fractal scaffolds for sustainable electronics. Polymer‐infiltrated leaf skeletons can be used to fabricate ultra‐smooth, reflow‐ and thin‐film‐compatible decomposable substrates, while making the same lignocellulose networks conducting results in flexible transparent electrodes.

Accounting for Forest Degradation in the Global Biosphere Management Model (GLOBIOM) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries (REDD) is a hot political and scientific topic. Deforestation is largely driven by the competition for land.

A Mechanistic Study of Bio‐Based Nanotemplated Carbon Nanofibers Derived From Water Processable Lignin Blends for Sustainable Energy Storage Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
As‐spun carbon materials produced from Lignosulfonate, gelatin, and alginate, selected for water solubility, and ability to produce templated sustainable carbon nanostructures. Gelatin and alginate are sacrificial during thermal processing, allowing the production of engineered high surface area nanostructures, which are further characterized for ...

Financing options to support REDD+ activities : Based on a review of the literature [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Halting the degradation and loss of tropical forests would go a long way towards mitigating climate change, preventing biodiversity loss, and securing the supply of vital goods and services, while underpinning long-term sustainable development ...

Inert Catalytic Sites Unlocked by Micropollutants for Rapid Water Decontamination with Near‐Complete Chemical Utilization

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Micropollutants can act as molecular triggers that activate a newly designed and chemically inert Fenton‐like PKU‐24 catalyst for on‐demand singlet oxygen generation from peroxymonosulfate (PMS), enabling nearly complete peroxide utilization and selective micropollutant removal from complex real‐world wastewater.

Assessing Forest Degradation Through Remote Sensing in the Brazilian Amazon: Implications and Perspectives for Sustainable Forest Management

open access: yesRemote Sensing
Forest degradation and forest disturbance are distinct yet often conflated concepts, complicating their definition and monitoring. Forest degradation involves interrupted succession and a severe reduction in forest services over time, caused by factors ...
