Accuracy Assessments of Local and Global Forest Change Data to Estimate Annual Disturbances in Temperate Forests

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2020
Forest disturbances are generally estimated using globally available forest change maps or locally calibrated disturbance maps. The choice of disturbance map depends on the trade-offs among the detection accuracy, processing time, and expert knowledge ...

Circular RNA expression landscapes in myelodysplastic neoplasms: Associations with mutational signatures and disease progression

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In this explorative study, the abundance of circular RNA molecules in bone marrow stem cells was found to be elevated in patients with high‐risk myelodysplastic neoplasms, and to be associated with an increased risk of progression to acute myeloid leukemia.

A Combined Deep Learning and Prior Knowledge Constraint Approach for Large-Scale Forest Disturbance Detection Using Time Series Remote Sensing Data

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2023
The scale and severity of forest disturbances across the globe are increasing due to climate change and human activities. Remote sensing analysis using time series data is a powerful approach for detecting large-scale forest disturbances and describing ...

Biodiversity in young versus old forest [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
This introductory essay has been written with the purpose to form a foundation for my PhD-study. My research task is to analyze how optimal selections of forest reserves can be made, considering biodiversity as well as economy.

Subtype‐specific enhancer RNAs define transcriptional regulators and prognosis in breast cancers

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study employed machine learning methodologies to perform the subtype‐specific classification of RNA‐seq data sets, which are mapped on enhancers from TCGA‐derived breast cancer patients. Their integration with gene expression (referred to as ProxCReAM eRNAs) and chromatin accessibility profiles has the potential to identify lineage‐specific and ...

When Trees Are Not an Option: Perennial Vines as a Complementary Strategy for Mitigating the Summer Warming of an Urban Microclimate

open access: yesBuildings
This study evaluates the potential of Boston Ivy (Parthenocissus tricuspidata) to reduce building surface temperature in a mid-latitude North American city center where vine use for this purpose is uncommon.

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Human Impacts on Forest Biodiversity in Protected Walnut-Fruit Forests in Kyrgyzstan [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We used a spatially explicit model of forest dynamics, supported by empirical field data and socioeconomic data, to examine the impacts of human disturbances on a protected forest landscape in Kyrgyzstan.

Directed evolution of enzymes at the crossroads of tradition and innovation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
An iterative cycle of data‐driven enzyme optimization comprising four stages: genetic diversification of a template enzyme, expression of protein variants, high‐throughput evaluation, and machine‐learning‐guided redesign of the next variant library.

A forest type-specific threshold method for improving forest disturbance and agent attribution mapping

open access: yesGIScience & Remote Sensing, 2022
Detecting forest disturbances and attributing their contributing agents with Landsat time series (LTS) images has advanced substantially in recent years; however, whether different forest types require individual disturbance indices or specific ...
